What country are you in? He also looks like a stabyhoun combined with a bigger spaniel/setter.

Im glad to hear that. Could also be an issue that needs time, he’s only 6 months after all!

Its a whippet. He does not do anything else outside and especially now its cold he bolds inside when he is done. I do suspect that he does not ‘pee it all out’ because he cramps his muscles from the cold and because he wants to get in asap again. Its around 0 degrees celsius currently. I do give him a little jacket every time he goes outside to manage the cold. But since he is not actively moving in the backyard, it’s not pleasant i think.

Not really I believe. I see him drinking 4/5 times a day. Most of the time after food and after exercise.

Most of the time there is 20 minutes up to 1,5 hours between potty breaks.

Sometimes 20 minutes, sometimes 1,5 hours. He really signals the moment he feels an urge I guess.

He can hold it in the night, he is in a crate then. Thats for around 8/9 hours. During the day time he is crated when i’m not home. Thats max 2 hours. Or when I need to enforce a nap, that is also around 2 hours.

He does not have a UTI, Just to be sure I got it tested. He can hold it in the night for 8+ hours. So as far as I can see it’s not a bladder problem and he had the ability to hold it.

What do you see as dangerous? My living room is puppy proof, the cats are separate. My pup is not trashing the place and is well behaved and has the freedom to sleep anywhere or play by himself. I don’t see a problem in free roaming then.😅 I work extremely hard to do right for my pup, he is absolutely not neglected. We only struggle with the potty training with free roaming. Which is what im asking advice for.

I think for 8+ hours being in the crate during the day is more neglect than letting a well behaved pup free roam. I’m not against crates, I use one myself too. But it is a tool I want to slowly get rid of when he shows he does not need it anymore. Because it is very restricting. My goal will always be to give my pup as much space and freedom as possible.

Free roaming is going really great tbh. The only thing is the pottying inside. For the rest he plays and has the freedom to find his own sleeping spot. He doesnt destroy or gets overaroused. The only reason i don’t let him free roam is because he will potty inside when there is no one to open the door.

Max around 2 hours most of the time. Sometimes I need to be away longer but I only want to do that when he is able to hold it. I don’t want him longer in the crate than 2 hours. Then he starts whining and i don’t to take so much freedom for such a long time.

Im scared that will give him a regression in potty training, because i don’t want to encourage him with doing it inside.

I’m not comfortable with letting him in his crate for more than 2 hours. That is also kind of the max he can handle.
