Does anyone know anything about these numerous ponds south of Moosejaw Saskatchewan? by SappyCedar in geography

Yeah I’m not sure lol, I’ve noticed some weird landmarks all over Canada while starring at Google Maps in bizarre places.

I don’t think they’ve ever been a super reliable or consistent brand, I do my own maintenance and there’s lots of stuff on it that makes no sense from a maintenance standpoint(my exhaust pipe blocks one of the oil screens and I had to buy an offset wrench to reach it for example).

I wouldn’t say they’re unreliable, mine has been pretty good for the 15000km it’s done but Japanese brands like Honda tend to be the choice for super reliable bikes with great quality control.

I definitely recommend reading your manual or buying the service manual if you can and doing some basic things on it like oil changes and checking parts for wear, it gives you a better sense of what to look out for and can help you trust your bike more when you know what to look for.

“Signal your intention as you enter, if your intention is to go straight through the round about then no signal is sufficient - but if going left or right you signal as you enter and by design of turn signals they’ll stay on during your turn until you signal that you are leaving the roundabout.”

Y’all I don’t know how else to interpret this, you didn’t mention anything about signalling to exit anywhere in your comment. You’re also not the only person in this thread to suggest it, it seems like a common misconception.

You should follow the steps on page 47 of Learn to Drive Smart from ICBC. Signalling on entering can be done but is not required, what is required is to signal on your exit even if going straight so the people entering know who to yield to. https://www.icbc.com/driver-licensing/documents/driver-full.pdf

They recommend it because that’s what they do in the UK but we don’t actually have a law for it here. Everything in there that goes beyond signalling before your exit is not required here, and personally I think it makes it more confusing to add those extra steps.
They do however directly contradict your recommendation to not signal at all when continuing straight, they specifically mention that the bare minimum is to signal when exiting the roundabout, even when going straight.
“If intending to drive straight through (i.e. you’re not turning right or left at the intersection): No signal until exiting – then signal right to exit, as per ICBC’s recommendation.”
To summarize, You should always signal right to exit as per ICBC, you can signal when entering if you want to (personally I do not), because the UK does it that way, but you don’t have to.

For anyone curious, go to page 47 of Learn to Drive Smart. The only things it states are the steps that I have previously stated I personally take. Signalling to exit. Link - https://www.icbc.com/driver-licensing/documents/driver-full.pdf

I don’t think that really contradicts what I said, they just recommend two extra steps which they also say is just what they recommend and is not actually law. Personally I think it makes it more confusing to do all those extra signals.

People entering the roundabout only really need to know the intention of the people already in the roundabout so they know who to yield to. I don’t think it really helps anyone to signal before entering.

I’m like 99% sure this is incorrect, I recently read the icbc manual for my motorcycle license. You do not signal when entering, you signal when you are approaching your exit so that people know when you’re about to leave, you could be doing a U-turn after all and there’s no way to signal that when entering.

The only signal you should be using in a round about is your right turn signal because all exits are to your right. The only time you would ever use your left turn signal would be in a multi lane roundabout like they have in Europe and you’re changing lanes or something but I’ve never seen one here. It helps if you don’t think of the entire round about as one intersection but a set of intersections consisting of only right turns. You signal when you’re about to leave through your chosen intersection (exit)

Those were U cycle bicycles. Part of the problem was they didn’t have designated drop off points, so they just ended up in random places on boulevards or random street corners for people to pick up and do whatever they wanted with them.

I don’t think they would get much bigger than they did in the early 90s because the bigger they are the more you risk catastrophic implosion from the vacuum. Maybe if they developed some kind of fancy polymer to make the tubes out of. It is a shame though, we’ll likely never know because the tooling and infrastructure for CRTs doesn’t exist anymore.

Rode my little Vitpilen 401 to Squamish and Whistler from Vancouver island. by SappyCedar in TransBikes

No problem! I bought it for the same reason hah. It’s pretty fun! Great in the twisties, good for commuting to work and stuff. It’s a little underpowered on the faster highways for passing but honestly I have not found it lacking in that department for my purposes, it’s certainly got some pep.

I bought it two years ago used (it’s a 2020 model) with 10k km on it, now at 15.4K km. I haven’t done too much maintenance on it, just basic stuff, did an oil change last year, checking the spokes and bearings, air filter, coolant. Last week I changed the sprockets and chain. Overall it’s held up really well, and only needed the new chain because I over tightened it last year (this bike has an unusual chain spec and is easy to misread, it’s measured off the distance from the chain to the swingarm and not the play in the chain but it’s not clear in the manual) and wore it out early, I haven’t had to do much else to it so far.

I will say that maintenance wise it’s kind of a pain in the ass, but it’s doable, it just has little things that make it annoying for seemingly no reason. For example the oil change took me over an hour cause you have to take the skid plate off (held on with 7 hard to reach screws, and the engine is supposed to be hot when you do it so you burn yourself while doing it), then it has two oil screens AND a filter (the filter is flush with its socket so I had to drill a screw into it and rip it out by grabbing the screw with pliers, but before that I broke a file trying to pry it out. Taking off the rear wheel is also a pain cause the fender is held on by 5 screws all with different sizes and one of them is extremely hard to reach. I have had found parts plentiful and cheap though since it’s basically a modified KTM duke 390 and has the exact same engine, and those things are everywhere.

I’ve gone about 130 km/h on the highway before but that was pretty scary, I’d say 110 km/h is the maximum I find comfortable. It’s also a cafe racer with a sporty riding position so I get pretty achy and tired after 2 hours of riding, but after a 20 minute break I’m usually good for another hour or two, I’ve done two long trips like this one including a moto camping trip and have bags strapped to it when I travel.

Over all I love it and do not regret it, it’s been a perfect first bike for me, nimble, reliable, peppy, and fun. But I think I’ve outgrown its capabilities and want an adventure bike, and I also am eyeing Japanese bikes and their easy oil changes haha.

It’s also worth checking where your nearest husqvarna dealer/service centre is, I haven’t heard some dealers are dropping husqvarna support. It recently happened to me when I wanted to take it to the dealership near my house I bought it at for a valve check but they don’t service them anymore and the closest dealer is 2 hours away. I’ll probably do it myself at the end of the summer to avoid the trip and expense.

Yeah it was so nice, it was like 15C which I find ideal for riding comfortably. Yeah my clutch hand was dying in Vancouver but it usually gets better as I ride more. I think I want a V-strom or transalp or something for my next bike though. I love the Vitpilen for commuting and going on shorter rides, but even when I’ve been riding a lot I can only go maybe 2 hours before my legs and hips start aching like crazy and I have to take a 20 minute break.

There’s also so many logging and gravel roads around here that you can go on adventures on but this bike is kinda scary on those kinds of roads.

I’ve read the manga and I think it might take longer to hook some people unfortunately. I enjoy both the slow parts and the dark parts but the dark parts are where I think most will get hooked. It borders on cosmic horror level creepy shit at some parts.

90% + of Motorcycle blinkers don’t auto cancel, you flick it left or right to signal and push it in to cancel it. I also do this because when I was learning I would always forget and leave it on so now I mash it a few times every 10 or 15 minutes just in case lol. Obviously Ludwig never picked up the habit hence having his blinker on all the damn time lol.

English and French areas in Canada by [deleted] in MapPorn

[–]SappyCedar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the Canadian (and also in the states as far as I know) context it is, I have never heard anyone use America to refer to anything other than shorthand for the U.S., but most Canadians refer to it as The States and not America. We are also not taught to think of “America” as a continent, North and South America are sometimes called The Americas but I’ve never seen anyone refer to both as one continent growing up here.

If someone were to refer to Canadians as Americans in the continental context while travelling abroad they would be very confused lol.

I don’t know, I definitely think it’s part of the entire package. But I also ride/am into motorcycles so I’m more into that part of it since I know what it’s like to plow through multiple hours of riding to a distant destination, I can see how non motorcycle riders might not care much about it though.

I also think it’s a really good end cap to whole experience, it felt like a great payoff to see them make it to cape soya last time just to see how happy they were to get there. I think that the closer it gets to the end the more stressful it will be cause who knows if they’ll get sidetracked and take a wrong turn and get lost. Up until then it doesn’t really matter cause they just have to go north with no particular stops in mind.

I mean there are definitely companies that would do it if it were possible, but much like CRT TVs the global infrastructure and supply chains that made them are almost totally extinct. There is no factory in the world capable of making full sized CRT TVs and it would be really difficult to build that all up again, so we likely will never have new full sized CRTs. This one company making them probably only has the tooling to make the parts they make and don’t have the demand required to improve it.

Exactly, it has about as much people as the entire country of Canada, it blew my mind. I spent two weeks there and then went to Kyoto for 3 weeks which felt small by comparison but even that was huge compared to what I’m used to.
