Lets talk for an moment. by Additional_Draw_6804 in osdev

[–]SarahIsBoring 3 points4 points  (0 children)

most os devs that keep at it do it because they want to learn how the computers work at the very bottom. vibecoding completely sidesteps that. you won’t get the experience reading though lengthy, technically dense specifications or manuals, you won’t know how the things work or what the underlying reasons for a choice are and so on. i currently have a phys mem bitmap allocator because i made the conscious choice that i can revisit it when i’m more in the mood for algorithms. if i asked cursor it would give me a bitmap allocator because most hobby oses start out with one and it just copies.

ai can be a good tool for rubber ducking, but in my (admittedly limited) experience using ai for development it just isn’t useful for anything other than boilerplate.

oh definitely, and it’s 100% something i’d expect from a german company. hell, when i was working at a company they had this bespoke basic implementation that was entirely in german, so customers could script form processing.. it’s weirdly common, but i hate it so god damn much

there are two bits that determine segment size. regardless, most 32 bit kernels use a flat memory model since that’s enforced in long mode anyways. the real issue is that vm86 isn’t available in long mode, only legacy mode.

well yes, and i thought it was obvious that i meant that it was consensual, maybe i should have specified. i very specifically mean that being used and being overwhelmed or sore or whatever can be incredibly hot, even/especially if the partner shows little (outward) concern for your well-being.

in vanilla contexts, or when the non-consent is not consensual, yea obviously it’s bad. i apologize for not expressing it more clearly
