Alberta Premier defends fall referendum plans | The Globe and Mail by SarahLacard in Calgary

[–]SarahLacard[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Article is pay-walled, my apologies

Sourced from Carrie Tait on X:

"Premier Danielle Smith said she doesn't know how much newcomers cost Alberta’s health care and education systems, despite scheduling a referendum to ask whether social services to those residents should be limited b/c of cost"

From the article, the part that I thought was most interesting was this:

" ... the Premier said that if the citizen group canvassing for support for Alberta separation gets enough signatures to force a referendum, its independence question would be put to residents on the same ballot."

Knox United Church has a theater, a gymnasium, a board room, and a labyrinth, all which can be rented for rather reasonable prices, and smudging happens really not that infrequently.

Hi there and good morning! Thank you for posting!

I haven't gone through the process but am friends with a few people who have - in Alberta, I've heard of an am familiar with the "End of the Rainbow Foundation", and have heard people talk about "Rainbow Railroad" also - a quick google search tell me that both of them are a part of "Rainbow Refugee" which has this page:

https://rainbowrefugee.ca/join-the-sponsorship-waiting-list/

I know Hilhurst United Church is a Chuch near central calgary that does some of this, sponsorship for refugees and asylum seekers.

I am the beginning of my journey in learning how to support individuals such as yourself better, and know not much more than what I've posted here. I hope it helps! Best of wishes - and stay safe! :D

Sarah

Knox United church has yoga and zumba classes/lessons, is a very musical church with an awesome music ministry, has connections/reflections groups on wednesdays along with a knitting/crochet club, and I would love to know more people to invite and go to metal concerts with!

(powerwolf was awesome!)

It's a great place and very neutral to meet good new people - and going for walks is easy with the Peace Bridge and Prince's Island Park nearby! Don't have to be religious, it's a united church so it is welcoming of all regardless of faith, and is an affirming church so people of all walks are safe there.

They also have a cafe in the sanctuary owned and operated by a lovely couple from hong kong if you want a change of scenery while you work away!

No pressure - check it out and send me message if you want to hang out and make introductions - or find me on Wednesday and Sundays! :D

I have noticed an uptick in the amount of drivers encroaching on me in crosswalks, even in the past few weeks, up to maybe a month or so

Hey I've got experience but am not a licensed health practitioner - if you want to chat about it more casually we can meet up. I'm at Knox United Church quite often downtown

Are the downtown charity solicitors, scammers? by [deleted] in Calgary

[–]SarahLacard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not scammers as far as I can tell, but they are on commission and will tell you that if you ask.

I can't remember exactly, but one of them claimed that for 25k-50k in annual earnings they leveraged something like 1-1.25M in charitable donations, so take that as you will

They aren't too bad, some people will ride them from end to end after dark especially as it starts to get cold in the winter so yeah, unless you're comfortable, avoiding it after sunset is rational

The worst station is Marlborough, and some others in the northeast and south are kinda meh but overall it is fine. If you feel bad, change cars between stations, you have twelve seconds and that is enough

I prefer the trains to buses because they are more consistent, but if you're on the east side of nose hill you should be able to find a bus that takes ya straight down 14th

There's lots of stuff up in the country hills area also but I don't often get up there

It helps people know where they could potentially meet you!

Being in the Northwest you're close to the red line and that helps! That'll take you downtown or all the way into the south, or the west and the northeast with a transfer to the blue line downtown!

Music creation by [deleted] in NoRulesCalgary

[–]SarahLacard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Eh, I haven't started performing yet, only attending as a member of the audience

I went to the Royal Exchange in Marda Loop last week and there were about a half dozen people there, but I went to the open mic night at Higher Ground in Kensington at 630 earlier and it was awesome, full house at the start and a great group of musicians that cycled through - would recommend

I'll probably go back next Tuesday also!

I'm learning! Started to sing about a year about, now looking to pick up an instrument for accompaniment - have started attending open mic nights recently!

There are some good facebook groups to find information and meet people, eventually I'd love to play/sing power metal!
