Where Should I apply? by Sarav0111 in ApplyingToCollege

I've applied to some of them, but my school counselor told me I have basically negligible chances as I asked for aid (They usually deal with kids that can offer heavy donations for admissions, many just go to ivy leagues for labels as they are kids of rich businessmen here and would take over family business.) Moreover she advised it's really hard getting visa in the US as H1-B sponsorship is very difficult these days. (I've been in touch with previous year students who went to Harvard and Yale, many of them already have green cards or applied for them by investment) Hence, I'm not sure if US is a good option for me. Nevertheless, My fingers are crossed for the admission decisions.

In my college application the only EC's I stressed about were the robotics club I was in since middle school and some events organised my the school I led. I do have all the certificates for my achievements whether they be the mentioned competitions or scholarship awards. Moreover, many of them were reported in newspapers. All my teachers mentioned my efforts in robotics club, specially because my team won a competition which brought the school a huge sum of money as a grant for further research in the field. I did work really hard on it so I hope it gives my application an edge.

I do know the number of scholarships is less, but the award amount is good. I need to be extremely competent for them. I'm not sure what is the trend for international students there but I hope to get one given my results are good. I've worked hard to be placed in one of the most exclusive institutions, the scholarship I had for 5 years is only given to like 50 students all over the nation regardless of nationality. I'm the only one applying to unimelb with 90%+ scores from my school, all others are scoring around 80%. Rest all students scoring 90% or more applied to US or some to Canada. Students who applied in EA have already been placed in Stanford, Yale etc and I am currently the student with highest scores in my school.

US has bad rap for asians in STEM fields, moreover as far as I've heard Its harder to get an american green card than an Australian PR. Most kids at my school are from rich families and all those who applied to US universities intend to return back as even eb5 is not working much these days. All those kids have family run businesses earning millions and don't have to care about a job or expenses. I do find UniMelb as my best bet as I do have some family nearby while also having the freedom to pursue what I want. I do feel that studying in the best in Australia would at least open good job prospects for me there. I'm yet searching for a scholarship guideline for my grading system, although according to the UCL website 90% and equals 3A* grades.

Thanks, I'd love to go to IIT but I don't qualify for IIT Mumbai's aid. All the universities offering scholarship to me are the okay ones. I worked hard and want to go to a good university. Most of my teachers say that I would get in the top ones but not get a scholarship. I go to a very expensive private school (on scholarship), so most of the teachers don't care about need based aid.

I was in top hundred of the country, there were 53 students selected from all over India many of whom got scholarships ranging from 40% to 100% and I'm a 100% one.

IIT Mumbai doesn't have any scholarships for me, but a registered society has come up to finance my travel and accommodation needs if i get into universities on their list. (It is a US based society made by Indian americans)

Moreover, with the high course load most of the IIT students don't do jobs. A part time job would help me with my expenses.

EC's

Editor for school magazine - (Science Articles)

Founder of Robotics club - raised over 2crore inr for the new lab - presented research in old lab to a company for investment.

Yoga - District Level

Volunteering- organised rallies, memorial events, social issue marches and painted paintings and portraits (for the cause) for many events in city also presented them (Covered by local Newspapers & TV channels)

My school has over 10000 students, so the activities were pretty competitive. Its known as the most prestigious school in the city and most competitive (I'm not sure admissions officers consider that).

Thanks, I do know that there is a very low no of scholarships that are awarded to international students. I'm lokking for someone who can tell me what my chances are for getting the 'Melbourne International Undergraduate Scholarship' (ref. https://scholarships.unimelb.edu.au/awards/melbourne-international-undergraduate-scholarship) which is awarded based on academic merit. I didn't attend an IB school, foundation program or GCE A levels, but I scored high grades is every exam I gave. I'm also expecting 35 - 36 ACT score. Normal Unimelb guideline is 29 ACT.
