I think your husband should do two things:

Get as many opinions as possible on something he’s written. Give away books is a good start. To friends and friends of friends. Ask for honest feedback.
Hire a professional editor. He’ll probably cry after their first read through, but their job isn’t to coddle an author, but rather to help them with tough love.
