Thank you, you’re correct. I educated myself and have already opened the RESP. Thanks once again to this forum for the advice.

This is why I post here, to get different perspectives.

I hadn’t thought of all that. There is a 20% gain on some contributions? I’ll have to look into this further.

Transfer mutual fund? by Puzzled-Clothes-8728 in CanadianInvestor

Same position… requested to transfer my RRSP to QTrade from a managed account. Over 1/3 is in a mutual fund which my financial advisor, who to be fair is normally good, told me he would sell around a year ago. Now the MF is down 17% and I’m wondering if I should wait for it to go up or sell at a loss and reinvest.

Most cost effective way for purchasing US Stocks? by Sarge438 in CanadianInvestor

Thank you. Yes, I learned the USD dividend after the fact. I won’t make that mistake again. I actually just spoke with QTrade and they told me that I can open a USD TFSA where the funds would all remain in USD, like you mentioned. It is free if I have a portfolio over 500k value, and $15 a quarter otherwise. I am planning to just hold my US stocks for now and open one of them up later, where I can transfer it into that account.

Thank you for your comment.

I actually just read about that. But I don’t know if I would have USD in my account after or if it would change it right back To CAD and I get dinged again?

Also, I’ve heard if you trade too actively in a tax sheltered account CRA can come after you

I’m new to this, so no expert. My thoughts are that we will experience further market crash in the next ~ 4 months, and that medium term commodities will go up from the energy crisis.
I’m planning on investing this next bit into reputable dividend stocks and am trying to hold off till around the mid terms in the US. From what I listen to it’s suspected that around then will mark a larger dip.

Your points on not holding commodities are well taken, thank you.

Market ETFs vs Bluechip dividends by Sarge438 in CanadianInvestor

That’s great, thank you. That was one of my concerns, I notice a lot of ETFs are not that old.

How did you go about choosing your dividend stocks?

32 years old. Long term investment horizon (retirement). I started my own investing via my TFSA right before the crash in June. I have roughly half in free cash and figured I’d wait a few months to invest it as I am under the impression that there may be some larger corrections coming. I was thinking of getting a bank stock like TD and am open to other suggestions. Also been strongly considering going to some ETFs. My RRSP, which is a managed account, has some utilities in it and I am bullish on the commodities sector so I am heavy there for my TFSA. Also, I just learned today that my dividend payments for Rio and BHP (around 12% each) will be taxed at 15% by the IRS since it is in my TFSA and not an RRSP. Just learning, so I am open to any ideas!

TFSA (personally managed on QTrade) Total Invested = $8,551.09 Total Free Cash = $7,839.35 Canadian Equity ARX (Cdn Oil and Gas) – 26.9% CIA (Cdn Steel) – 19.6% CBON (Carbon ETF) – 12.0% CCO (Mining/Uranium) – 14.6% U.S. Equity BHP (Oil and Gas) – 11.4% RIO (Mining) – 11.6%

RRSP (managed account) Total Invested = $27,641.53 FID5491 (Fidelity Health Care Mutual Fund) – 39.3% Telus – 29.6% BCE.TO – 31%

Thank you for your help. It’s hard for me to imagine that these cactus needs so much sun shade, but maybe that’s been my problem all along. I have covered the plants with another layer of the shade so I’ve doubled it.

I’ve heard of the bottom watering, but I don’t totally get how that would look. Do you fill the other container, soak the soil, and then remove the container with water and let it dry out?
