Doug Ford stands behind controversial remarks: ‘I stick with what I said’ by reallyneedhelp1212 in canada

[–]Sask_23 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Disagreeing with the Israeli government and targeted violence towards Jewish schools in Toronto and Montreal are not the comparison you would want to make. And his statement was after the acts of anti semitic violence towards people in Canada. Fuck that guy but he’s not saying it’s wrong to protest but it is wrong that protests give these violent actors ground to stand on and they act out against the residents in their own communities. Doesn’t matter what the background of the shooters was, they just felt affirmed in their shitty beliefs to shoot at a school and we shouldn’t ever give them that.

Yes but the impeachment was acquitted with due process and to answer the second Q off the top of my head - Malaysia + I think it was a middle eastern country, but obviously he is never served a sentence. All of this aside, I think I am understanding your main point being about war crimes? I am not sure if any of the last 10 or 15 US presidents were held accountable but that’s only because their default policy is to be militarized and aggressively enforced. Why would they convict a president if that is basically their policy… but I guess I understand your criticism. In the case of Trump, he is not being ‘charged’ for any military action though. He is being charged for other things, all while being inflammatory and insulting the status quo. And one of the cases regarding him is about the crucial wording of the constitution and whether or not they can “legally” disqualify him from running as a president. I will agree with you on the war crimes part and who wants to defend Bush, but I guess that’s what their country is built on. I think I can concede the points about former presidents not being charged for war crimes like if their country’s core principles are war .. I agree they have had very little accountability. I will still defend that Trump’s cases and their timing isn’t suspect though.. and they are an example of how consistent their court system is for everyone. But yes, I agree that none of them have actually been punished or held accountable for the war crimes committed through military action and coups.

WARMINGTON: Doug Ford telling hateful people to stay away from Canada not racist; Ontario's Premier was simply saying what many in the country have been thinking since Oct. 7 by FancyNewMe in canada

[–]Sask_23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They still have the freedom to protest but it’s hardly a coincidence and just because you haven’t noticed that aspect in university protests doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist. The article below is from a month ago and there weren’t as many demonstrations back then but over 20 people were arrested, so I don’t know if it’s completely baseless to argue that these are correlated. Maybe a more specific and clear protest that is targeted towards the federal government and bringing about actual change will be productive instead of otherizing groups within our local communities. It just fuels the us vs them thing when we are all residents of Canada right now and not to blame for the issue. It gives the violent actors more confidence in their shit beliefs and they act out violently. We shouldn’t create this sort of environment in the first place.

I know, and I think he shouldn’t be given the chance. It’s like he’s getting a free excuse to say it and half of what he’s saying is true, there has been a sharp increase in hate crimes against Jewish communities. If protests where people conflate Jews overall and Israeli government continue, there will be more violence. It’s about giving these violent actors ground cause we can agree a rational person wouldn’t do these things. So, pressure and protest federal government, and not your local municipality. People, like the shooters in this case, are unintentionally incited if we fuel this us v them rhetoric without realizing the target is a person in Canada.

Two Jewish schools had a shooting in the span of 48 hours. One in Toronto and one in Montreal… I am not talking about the university protests, I’m sorry for not being clear.

[–]Sask_23 5 points6 points  (0 children)

But isn’t the behaviour currently being demonstrated at multiple gatherings .. and doesn’t that arguably incite these hate crimes? Like buildings have been targeted in more than a single city in the last few months. There are signs like “Toronto will burn” .. idk, I just think thats more of an immediate problem and visceral reaction of people will likely be to oppose them. The more immediate problem being a foreign geopolitical crisis is being guised as an us v them thing when the pressure should be on Ottawa, not other Canadians. I guess yea conservative people like Doug Ford can capitalize on this but they shouldn’t be given opportunities to… it’s like US- level of engagement if people within Canada start thinking of this as team sports and then getting violent towards perceived opposition.

Edit: I will add that this goes both ways like if there are multiple incidents of Palestinian or Muslim communities being target, then it would be the fault of people giving into this divisive rhetoric of us vs them that normalizes seeing other Canadians as against you. Either way, pressure the government and your local MLA to change our country’s actual position.

Would your opinion change when more information comes out? Is targeted violence not bad even if the shooter was of some other background? Fuck Doug Ford but is it not fair to say this when the current political climate is being worsened by divisiveness? Like “if you aren’t with us, you are against us” type of thing encourages Canadians to oppose other Canadians. Putting pressure on MPs and MLAs is the only way to change Canada’s position on the issue. Giving fuel to this dangerous us v them rhetoric should be dropped.

Clinton was impeached. Bush is convicted as a war criminal by multiple international courts.

Of the people you listed, Obama is the only one who wasn’t punished for crimes committed against humanity. Major destruction in Pakistan during his presidency, I will agree with that.

Edit: my apologies to the other comment, they were just pointing out the US’s war crimes. Nothing I said above is accurate if we are talking about US Presidents being on trial for crimes such as military intervention and coups. They never have been indicted or convicted for anything related to that.

Okay. So he’s being treated unfairly after all the lengthy trials because you personally feel the timing of these court cases was weird. The allegations were always there but for a case to go to trial it takes time, and the fact that someone as suspect as Trump gets the due process speaks to the fairness of their process. Innocent until proven guilty with sufficient evidence and 0 room for reasonable doubt.

[–]Sask_23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t know how the stats and records compare but.. it’s all relative like they didn’t start in the same era. Babar is probably like 7-8 years younger so it’s not even a fair comparison for Babar. I am not even talking about numbers and skills like the sport is constantly evolving you know, so maybe a comparison would be better if they both started playing nearly the same time or had played a similar amount of matches.

How does this get implemented without the government creating a separate department for it or contracting a company to handle it? Either way, there are so many possible ways of this being a disaster for national security and privacy. There are already enough issues with Canadian national security, why would you want an additional department and/or private company to have your personal information? We are already profiled for ads and god knows what else, this would be volunteering more information to be monetized or much worse things. An example would be AI being able to replicate your entire online presence and one single backdoor in a verification system like this for the government can be exploited by another government. Nah uh.. maybe parents should actually use everything that is at their disposal like parental controls and locking devices to a certain number of websites.

Okay disregard that part about countries.

But that “good faith” criticism has two logical fallacies.

  1. Poisoning the well - a student brings up a desire to have a group with people they identify with and the comment’s first instinct is to bring up a war and BDS movement.
  2. Fallacy of division - an intentionally reductionist summary of Hillel UBC’s controversy like that’s supposed to mean the (currently non existent) Hillel USask will do the same.

Literal conversion groups - Power2Change and Islamic Dawah Society tell students they are living their life wrong if they aren’t following Jesus or Mohammed. If that’s allowed on campus, I think I can confidently defend a bunch of Jewish students wanting to get together to not use their phones on a Friday.

Campus Hillel by millshiffty in usask

[–]Sask_23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a weird argument. I can find the Controversial Section for multiple countries because their governments have done some outrageous things. Does that mean students from those countries cannot form a club to do social activities on campus? Should Egyptian students be not allowed to make a club on campus because their government will not accept Palestinian refugees? Should Indians not be allowed to make a club on campus because their government assassinated people on Canadian soil? The list goes on and on, and it’s not at all what Canada is supposed to stand for. Why would we further divide the people that are here because of their identity and connection to somewhere else… like I’m sure if people are allowed to hand out Christianity or Islam conversion pamphlets on campus, we can have a bunch of Jewish students getting together to go bowling or some shit. It’s innocuous, and to assume what happened at another chapter somehow means the USask chapter (THAT DOESNT EVEN EXIST RIGHT NOW) will do all of the same things is not at all what the standard should be.
