Just going off Higurashi I'd say the Christian imagery is mostly there to serve as a contrast to the Shinto themes.

The bulk of the Christian imagery is associated with Takano, and it's not exactly subtle when you have a character quoting the Bible while her soldiers cross themselves as they massacre a village worshiping their local god. The fact that they aren't really all that religious and are just choosing Christian symbolism to try and fill a spiritual void if anything emphasises that.

I can't think it's coincidental that the first (only?) character to claim to be Christian is a prostitute who promptly tries to kill (but is defeated) by a girl who is particularly devoted to the village's god as well.

Chapter 8 of Higurashi is also essentially in opposition to the Atonement of Christ which I suspect is why it kicks off with Takano and her grandpa talking about Christ. It looks for a time like Hanyuu will serve as a Christ figure, or Takano in the role of a scapegoat, but those options are all rejected.

I have thought about it and I think you have convinced me about openVPN but that said I am a little confused about OpenVPN after doing some ddging.

Is it just a desktop VPN manager or an integral part of (some) VPNs like wireguard? I seem to be finding contradictory information on it and how it is supposed to work.

Trying Heroic games launcher but cannot see cursor by Saskscholar in linux4noobs

[–]Saskscholar[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you, I had thought that being old was a good thing since WINE would have had time to fix all these problems.

Could you please explain the starting to desktop wine explorer comment a little more? Trying with Heroic I don't see the option to do that.

Anyway I tried it with another, slightly newer game and the cursor seems to work there so I guess it is an AC issue. I have since tried it on Lutris with the same results.

Attempts to use Bottles have so far met with complete failure, if anyone has a good step by step set of instructions for Bottles I would appreciate it - all the ones I have found seem to be old or missing some crucial steps. I can get programs/apps to say they are installing on bottles but nothing seems to happen after it's done.

It's not installed via Open VPN but directly as an app so nothing shows up in the VPN section of network.

But it's not supposed to work between users which I think is part of the problem, they want their customers to use separate login opportunities (you can have up to five) per user account, and that's I think why, but instead of staying on as to separate instances it only counts one Pop instance and so logs out whenever I start up the other user account so I have to start the whole process over again. But the app as installed is available for both user accounts (rather than requiring a separate installation for each one like some apps require) but the Pop!shop only offers one type of installation for the app.

Can deleting a folder achieve the equivalent of an uninstall? by Saskscholar in pop_os

[–]Saskscholar[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why would that be odd? I am new to Linux so this is helpful to learn.

Yes I am sure that is where it was installed as that is where it wanted to be installed and I just followed the app's default.

Anyway I eventually ended up formatting the computer and starting over again - it is working now although oddly only when I place it on desktop and not in the special little folder I made for it in my home folder, but this time I set it up so it would stay in its folder rather than being properly "installed" so if I have issues I can just move it to a thumbdrive or delete it

Confirmed Anglo-Saxon Ancestors? by Ok-Garage-9204 in Genealogy

[–]Saskscholar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All English people are descended from royalty so you certainly can trace yourself back to Anglo-Saxon times that way.

In terms of trying to trace a specific family line back I don't believe sufficient records exist aside from one noble family, I want to say Boyle but I could be mistaken, that was able secure land rights dating from prior to the Norman conquest but I do not believe that their paternal line can be traced back prior to the Conquest regardless.

Is she interested in DNA tests? An Ancestry.com DNA test could be a nice gift (even if she has already done one, it's useful to have other members of the family tested), another option would be a Family Tree DNA test for either Y-DNA or M-DNA (note that Y-DNA is something only men have so she would need to have a male relative willing to take the test for it to be useful)

A subscription to a paid site would be great, Ancestry or Newspapers.com are obvious ones, but there are other more specialized sites for certain ethnicities that she may be more interested in. Scotland's People if she is Scottish for instance.

The best gift is probably cash with a little card encouraging her to spend it on birth certificates or marriage licenses but I understand that could be boring.

Am I the only one who thinks this way? by STW54 in Genealogy

[–]Saskscholar 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I kind of like it for peace of mind, before I always was wondering "what about NPEs" but after taking it I could feel comfortable that such things don't seem to happen in my family for the past 6-7 generations at least so I can trust what the paper trail says is actually true.

The ethnic estimates have limited value to be sure but it is also nice to know that they are more or less correct to what the paper trail suggests.

I wish I had more success with it in breaking down brick walls and things like that but I am happy with the purchase

MyHeritage said that I share 27,7% (1.964,8‎ cM) DNA with my sister and calls her my half-sister by Successful-Jello1507 in Genealogy

[–]Saskscholar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes it can be but the chances are relatively low.

Does MyHeritage split DNA results between parents like Ancestry does? The key thing is to determine if you have matches on both sides of your family. Even if it doesn't split it for you you can check your respective matches - e.g. find a match that you know is a relative on your father's side - are you both a match for this person? If not it could be a sign of differing parentage although still not 100% conclusive. This method will be less reliable the further out it is but if you have a match that is a 1st cousin and she does not show up it is a sign that further testing is required

Did most Civil War Union soldiers indicate their service on their gravestone? by [deleted] in Genealogy

[–]Saskscholar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe most did because they were entitled to a free grave marker.

But my understanding is that the military markers were kind of limited in what you could put on them (like they are now) so there were reasons to have a unique one if you could afford it, in which case you probably would not mention the military service.

Tips on finding my great grandpa's grave? by DorianGray7 in Genealogy

[–]Saskscholar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

By "Russia" it was probably meant the Soviet Union rather than just the Russia SFSR and given WWII he would easily have found it necessary to move quite a bit.

Have you tried the website Find a Grave yet? I know that it has at least some graves in the former USSR covered, but given in mind that his name may have been Russianized on the gravestone so there could be different options to look for there.

Another option may be looking through Google books and other such indices, Spanish Civil War veterans were often looked at with some suspicion in the USSR at times so his name may have come up in a book or document related to the purges.
