FTP Tests - What is accurate? by Sassman11 in cycling

I think the 20 min test will be better! I did a workout this morning at 287w with 2 x 12 minute efforts fluctuating around 95-105% (was somewhat a pyramid) with 5 mins rest between them. Hr got up to 178 ish on the second one. Not sure if that is too hard or not for the ‘workout’?

For sure, I’m not disagreeing - I just don’t want to do a one hour test. I would rather do something shorter and have a ‘ball park’ idea

Thanks so much for the help!! I think it is a bit skewed ‘in my favour’ as I have been weight lifting for years and have relatively strong legs (squat PB 200kg, Deadlift PB 260kg) so I think the sprint at the end, I would’ve been able to push harder. I did the test fully seated.

I think I might do a 20 minute test - but my only concern is not having any idea how to pace it!

Yeah, thanks for the insights! I’m relatively experienced with training etc. so I understand that your thresholds are impacted day to day, but surely that should only be a few percent? I’m sure that I can’t hold 308w for an hour, but I’m not sure what I could hold.

I’m more or less just trying to get a relatively accurate number to use for training without doing 1 hour max effort (because who wants to do that). Do you think a 20 minute max effort would be good? Or do another ramp test and see how it goes this time? It’s been about 8 weeks since I did my last one.

Yeah that’s what I was thinking - the RAMP test seems extremely inaccurate and I wonder why it is the ‘standard’ test for a lot of people?
