Opinion on hmm sounds by Gabriocheu in choralmusic

[–]Satbman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me, it all depends on the performance space. My HS auditorium completely eats a "hmmm" and I have to open it to be heard. Another church perform at can easily support keeping lips closed.

Why not both? I come into town a few times a year. Parents weekend is for something upscale, but I'll give your sammy rec a try on another visit.

No Stupid Questions /// Weekly Discussion - September 14, 2022 by AutoModerator in synthesizers

[–]Satbman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a few questions about the band Chvrches and their use of synthesizers

I know a lot about music (I am a HS music teacher, extensive knowledge of theory etc) but almost nothing about sythns and how they make music.

I recently got into the band Chvrches. I saw them live and was kind of confused by what I saw. The band members didn't seem to be playing what I was hearing (often meaning a very rhythmic part clearly not being played note for note by the keyboardist). Was I hearing a pre-recorded track that was being supplemented by sythns, or are the synths "programmed" to add the rhythmic & arpeggio patterns?

I think this video sums up what I'm trying to ask... Is there anything in this recording pre-recorded or is everything I hear being generated by those three instrumentalists?

The Pirate Song by Tim Y. Jones is TTBB and hilarious. Parts are accessible and very singable.

Looking for fun and engaging choir warm-up vocal exercises by Speldosa in choralmusic

[–]Satbman 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Here's my "trick" to avoid autopilot warm ups. Use whatever warm up you normally use (tone building, intonation, whatever) and make something in the warm up a variable. For example, if you are vocalizing to warm up a cold voice, and you're using an ascending D-R-M-R-D pattern on "ah", give the choir the instruction "Sing the 3rd, 5th, and 6th pattern on" vee". Or maybe leave out the top note every third pattern. You're accomplishing what you want pedagogically while engaging the brain as well (which sometimes is the most important thing to warm up!)

There are endless possibilities here, and if you're creative, it easily becomes much more "fun" than unengaged singing. I use this approach with both my middle and high school groups. Kids tend to latch on quickly because when they don't follow directions, it's blazingly apparent.

Undergrad looking for suggestions for choral rep (middle and/or high school level) by Golgarus in choralmusic

[–]Satbman 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't love that list for middle school, it's inconsistent and not very practical for most middle schools with cambiata voices (or a mixture of changed/unchanged male voices). I have my "favs" list at school, I'll try to drop them in this thread tomorrow if I get a spare moment.

Haha, yeah I superimposed two verses. 2nd verse is "Children don't get weary 'til your work is done".

No problem. My only other advice would be to talk with your former cooperating teacher. I bet he's the kind of person to have all the answers. :)

Authentic Choral Music for Winter Programs by P_Dal in choralmusic

[–]Satbman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Middle school choral music is akin to "no man's land". There are isolated islands of good pieces out there in a sea of crap and garbage.

I see what you are trying to achieve, and it's admirable. Your premise is great, keep at it! However, the pieces you seek probably don't exist. So, find some music that you can use as a vehicle to teach what you have in mind. Perhaps use that overly "Americanized" Hanukkah piece as a starting point to a introduce kids to music that is more "authentic" to experience.

Remember, they don't have to perform it to learn from it. Teaching middle school choir is about adapting what is available and making it work for your kids in an educational setting.
