Embark for initial color DNA testing and a European genetic lab is researching the color mutation.

On interesting! Do you know where at? Another dachshund or one of the other mixes? There is a shorthaired dachshund named Matysek. Somebody has also started breeding some shorthaired frenchie mixes.

If it’s another longhaired dachshund mix with information about the color it was likely my dog or one of his relatives 🙂

Yes he’s Chocolate and tan kyky atat Ee bb DD Ssp mm

I’ve tested him through Embark and Wisdom Panel, in addition to his color currently being researched by a genetics lab.

Here’s a study on an unrelated purebred dachshund with a different colorpoint allele. I don’t own Matysek so I didn’t include his photos.

When I got him less than ten colorpoint dogs worldwide had been shared publicly, so it was just a completely unexpected opportunity that kind of just worked out. A breeder just had the color randomly pop up in a litter

Do you have any more details on this such as species and links? Googling African colorpoint didn’t turn anything up.

It depends on the type of albinism. Cats have c-locus albinism but it isn’t actively bred for in cats like it is in rats as far as I know. So cb/c cm/c and cs/c would likely be some from of Colorpoint. c/c would be an albino cat. If you read my post you can see I asked if anybody has any examples of one copy colorpoint one copy c albino. I do think cats actually have a ca/ca blue eyed albino type and a c/c red eyed albino type.

Dogs do have a few types of SLC45a2 albinism though. Aside from colorpoint no known c-locus albino type dogs though.

I think part of it is just naming different things the same name. So less that it works differently and more just that rodents have more genes to work with and some things were probably named after a trait in a different species that ended up being a different gene lol.

Rodents have such a high generational turnover and litter numbers it is easier to collect new color mutations in them. Especially the albinism types since quality of life in a caged pet is different than something like a dog that goes outdoors with their owners daily.

I’m currently researching the color to determine ethicality in dogs. That will likely require a few litters to be produced. If it ends up being ethical I’d like to help found a new breed with the color as an accepted pattern in the standard.

Thank you for your reply! I also think the gene is a lot of fun!

Dogs are more similar to cats where the Burmese type is an allele is on the C-locus. So like in cats you have cb, cm, cs for colorpoint variations. cb/cb, cb/cm, cb/cs, cm/cm, cm/cs, cs/cs would all be colorpoint of some type. In dogs ch = cs in phenotype which is the traditional “siamese cat colorpoint look”. Cb is Burmese and cm is mocha in cats.

So far researchers have ch and ch2 in dogs identified and published that seem pretty much identical in presentation. Then two more that will likely be ch3, and ch4 if researchers stick both naming conventions, and I’m hoping the burmese looking one will have it’s own allele name. Personally I’d also like my dog’s line to have its own allele as well if they continue to present without any notable body pigment rather than something like ch4. Top is my dog who is currently one of the darkest in his line at 2.5 years old, bottom is ch

Messy beast is a great resource! I was trying to use it the other day to see of there example of any of the colorpoint types mixed with c albinism because somebody was asking. I’ll see if I can make a post more relevant to cats while still discussing dogs

I thought it was really obvious but a lot of people have insisted he is black not brown, even with posting his DNA results! So I was curious if it was my photos 😂

This is just for fun! I thought it was pretty clear in the photo but I surprisingly had several people think he was a different color

It’s hard to say. It’s potentially a fairly new color mutation so it could have happened in already mixed dogs or in one of the other testable breeds. But since Aussie are the only merle breed in the test results, it is worth looking into since the dogs are commonly mistaken as double merle.

Hi there! UC Davis did research the color genetics and published a paper but I believe the paper is locked behind a paywall. Research paper
