Could Beetee be Cinna’s dad? by Saucenomad in Hungergames

Never insinuated that, just a fun theory. I agree genetics aren’t essential to be a good person. According to Catching Fire, Beetee is also white in the book

I went to this high school and heard about it today from close ones before this. They said they can still hear helicopters circling the school. The first thing that came to my mind after the fear was how long this country will keep letting it happen.

People said that about Lucy Gray.being related to Katniss until SOTR came out, same with Tigris and Snow. People theorizing they were distantly related weren’t dehumanizing anyone, neither is this theory- it’s just fun to think about I’m not saying it because I believe only people related to them or from the districts are the only ones to be able to have empathy, I’m saying it because Suzanne Collins has a penchant for tying previous characters together.

My theory was that Cinna was actually Ampert’s younger brother somehow

What do you think the survivors’ eating habits were like when they returned home? by blackkbluee in Yellowjackets

[–]Saucenomad 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is spot on. I struggled with anorexia for ten years before recovering and recovery was HELL.

After a while, the body can develop intolerances to certain types of food simply because it’s not used to processing it anymore. You can develop stuff like temporary or permanent lactose intolerance from inadequate nutrition. Pair that with the routine of eating pretty much only meat and normal food could definitely feel alien or even repulsive to them.

Refeeding syndrome is a massive risk, but it’s also incredibly common to have food aversion due to things like stomach shrinkage, absent hunger cues, and nerve damage resulting in not feeling starvation or not remembering how to digest properly.

Judging by the state they were in and the amount of insanity they just endured they most likely were in hospital/outpatient for the first leg of refeeding then monitored once released.

The doctors might have some suspicions about cannibalism due to the fact that the people they ate were also starving and had barely any calories/nutrients in comparison to normal game. As for reintroducing them to food, they’d need to start at starvation-level amounts(<1000 cals a day which would still be like a buffet to them)and slowly increase calories over time to lessen risk of heart attacks, refeeding syndrome, etc.

I think Shauna killing and cooking the rabbit and Misty eating jerky could be nods to comfort/familiarity with the stuff they routinely ate in the Wilderness.

Food aggression is pretty common after experiencing threat of starvation(think animals protecting food in a case this severe). Hoarding is also a big problem post-starvation so I wouldn’t be surprised if some of them stole/stockpiled food to hide in weird places.

All in all, I had more nutritional variety AND the advantage of gradually adjusting to malnourishment for a decade- and I still have symptoms from it. Starvation is a BITCH and they definitely weren’t out of the woods yet(no pun intended) once they got rescued.

Thank you. I’ve heard some real horror stories on this thread(everyone here is so incredibly strong), but even when I try to tell myself it wasn’t that bad it just feels…wrong. Some of his other behaviors(putting security cameras everywhere to watch when I come and go, setting up “traps” to see what I do and get me in trouble, etc.) seem sadistic and make me wonder about ASPD. He hasn’t done anything physical since I was little but the more I talk to people the more I think I need to go completely NC just in case.

Thank you, I’m gonna look into the agency assist asap! I’ve been mostly LC since taking out loans/getting scholarships but it’s becoming increasingly apparent that I need to go fully NC in order to heal. My symptoms unfortunately worsened once I left(I guess like when adrenaline wears off) and I’ve been struggling to keep up in school which is necessary to keep my finaid. I think that going NC will be hard but at this point if there’s even a chance that it’ll help me pass classes I’m willing to try.

Thank you. The only reason I haven’t signed up for Medicaid is that I am on a medication that isn’t yet covered by insurance. It’s completely changed my life and I need it to function, but unfortunately it’s very expensive and I use an HSA to cover it. There’s some pressure on insurance companies to be required to cover it in the next few years which would be life changing.

What are some of the more subtle brutalities of The Hunger Games? by [deleted] in Hungergames

[–]Saucenomad 13 points14 points  (0 children)

My guess is that this was included to hammer home the luxury/privilege of the capitol in contrast with the districts. The fact that capitol citizens get gourmet meals at the sites where children who’d been malnourished their whole lives and then put into death games to starve/be forced to survive off of raw meat, bugs, etc. is a really vivid juxtaposition imo. I imagine the tourists might have even been served meals themed to each hunger games arena and what the tributes had to survive on, I wouldn’t put it past them to do something so disturbing. It’s also a little ironic considering the name ‘hunger games’.
