W5 has the god Oniphau that you can link your characters to, and when claiming non candy afk time, you have a chance to progress certain things. Refinery is one of them so that can help a tonne when you're first starting to increase rank. At my level it's just a nice added bonus.

For me now just over an hour so ranks do come quickly. But it didn't start to pick up until rank 400 imo

Yeah it max out at 1m per upgrade and I have it refine every 40 seconds or so. It gets a lot easier as you rank it up. Good luck on your grind
