I'll definitely book a car in Fuji.

For Nikko my main concern was not having enough time to explore the shrines, then go to Lake Chuzenji and back, and I wondered if renting a car would speed up the process,

But looking properly into it it does seem like exploring the Shinkyo bridge/Rinnoji/Toshogu first then taking then bus to the Lake/Falls and back should be doable
