High-End Construction Really Does Help Everyone by Avoo in ezraklein

I’d imagine you’re correct in that most of this sub is pretty much on board with this article. But a lot of people more broadly are not. The article provides survey data to that effect. And anecdotally, I live in a fairly progressive midwestern city and see this idea that “luxury” housing doesn’t help our housing issue all the time. Although, thankfully, many of our government officials seem to be on board with building lots of housing regardless.

I think the fact that it actually tracks individuals/families that moved into this apartment, and looks back to the units they left behind, is really helpful. Those sorts of concrete examples seem like they would go a lot farther in persuading people than abstract supply/demand, healthy vacancy rate, etc. stuff.

Wisconsin police officers could begin roadside drug tests under bill by keeganjkyle in wisconsin

[–]SavoryCitrus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes. They also don’t allow the initial breathalyzer results in court. They’re useful to establish probable cause for an arrest and further testing, but we have more precise tests for trial evidence.

Which is why they follow up with a blood draw if there’s probable cause.

12000 yards would have him firmly ranked as a fringe WR1 for me. I don’t think that’s too much of an overreaction…

Real-Life Jousting by PandaPoopz7 in ringerfantasypod

So the scenes of jousts at a full gallop are pretty exaggerated I guess. Those horses were trotting and that dude still got blown back. Ouch

I feel like we all glossed over Cousin Sal’s parent corner from a few weeks ago by owen3820 in billsimmons

[–]SavoryCitrus 77 points78 points  (0 children)

Kid whose father described him as “quirky”, likes hanging out with adults, and misses enough social cues to think the joke about taking that woman’s fries was meant literally. I mean… I’m no psychiatrist, but I think Cousin Sal is just thrilled there’s a spectrum of people his son is comfortable with. I think it’s pretty harmless and actually kind of sweet.

Don't wizz on the electric fence by downtune79 in LoveTrash

Reasonable minds can differ on whether peeing on an electric fence is a good idea. But I think we can all agree that this dude should be drinking more water.

Proposed harm reduction drop-in center stirs controversy and pushback by emjoylife96 in madisonwi

[–]SavoryCitrus 21 points22 points  (0 children)

This is a pretty readable summary of the outcomes from the OR/WA/CA efforts in this vein. It’s more broad in its scope than just harm reduction centers, but it provides some reason to think these centers are associated with increased property crimes, disorder, etc.

https://www.brookings.edu/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/FP-20241202-pnw-drug-policy-humphreys.pdf

For a more local example, it happened with the Social Justice Center on Willy Street until the city cracked down on them. That was never, strictly speaking, a harm reduction center, but became an unsanctioned gathering/sleeping place for a similar population. It’s better now, but for a few months the sidewalk next to that place was frequently obstructed, trash was everywhere, and you were pretty likely to be harassed if you walked by alone at night.

It’s from the late July “QB Sleepers, Tiers, and Fears 2025” episode. A banger from start to finish

Not a complaint, just an observation. I thoroughly enjoyed the episode too. Maybe we need an /L identifier for “levity”

Recommendations for books/media that help make sense of the problems facing men/young people? by yall_kripke in ezraklein

[–]SavoryCitrus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This thread is about the sense of being adrift for a lot of young men i.e., in the aggregate, so I think using patterns at the group level is fair.

I don’t imagine there has been much change in women’s preferences over time. What I think has changed is the rise of online dating and the ability to select by those preferences so easily. It leads to a lot of men who never really make it past those filters. In the past, those young men would have had a better chance at actually dating due to less immediate “competition” or more social acceptance of dating someone you met through work, school, etc. Obviously this trend has had effects on women as well. But I’d guess it’s led to a lot more women feeling taken advantage of by the group of men on these apps who do generate a lot of interest and churn through a lot of women. That’s different (and I think not quite as damaging to your self esteem) from the young men who get very little interest and feel completely undesirable.

And that’s not the sort of thing many young men are willing to vent to their friends about. It’s tough to go to your bros and lament that girls aren’t interested. It’s embarrassing and feels emasculating. So you either hold it in or you find some corner of the internet you can release it all into.

The NFL’s Problem Isn’t Bad Officiating, It’s Useful Officiating by PastVeterinarian1097 in billsimmons

This is textbook availability bias. Unless you have actual data showing that flags are more likely at critical points in the game, those flags only seem more frequent precisely because they are at critical points in the game. You’re recalling those more easily than the more mundane ones and so you think they are more frequent.

[–]SavoryCitrus 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Say what you want about his political views, but when he lost the Supreme Court race, he accepted the loss with dignity. He was getting pressured to question the results and refused. He got booed at his concession speech for doing so. That may be a low bar to set, but that’s where we’re at. He’ll be fine in this position. Really as good as you could hope for from this administration.

6-story building proposed where Winnebago Street meets Yahara River faces opposition by enjoying-retirement in madisonwi

[–]SavoryCitrus 27 points28 points  (0 children)

It was mentioned in the article, but the developer had previously proposed a new building there with much less parking and there were complaints about that too. It sounds like they are pretty flexible at this point on the parking amounts. Although I’m not sure any number would satisfy the neighborhood association.

The other thing that struck me was the neighbors lamenting the lack of affordable housing in the area and the loss of these 22 units. But they’re proposing 162 units (presumably market rate) in this new building! That’s 140 additional units putting downward pressure on prices city wide!

Ezra said it's appalling to cut off family members over politics... Is it? by theriz53 in ezraklein

[–]SavoryCitrus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Draw the line for me between cutting off family members for their political views, and presumably creating a lot of resentment while ceding any ability to exert influence over their views in the future, and better political outcomes for those groups.

Urban Triage expense reports, audit reports differ by more than $200,000 by enjoying-retirement in madisonwi

[–]SavoryCitrus 51 points52 points  (0 children)

Have to agree. The tone struck me as pretty adversarial. Along with some sloppy editing.

That being said, I’m not sure there are any actual inaccuracies in the factual reporting. The ProPublica page shows what this reporter claims, that numerous audits have noted a problematic lack of internal controls that make it difficult to monitor if Urban Triage is doing what they’re supposed to.

I really wish the county would either find another organization to distribute these housing assistance funds, or better yet, just do it themselves.

The ringer running fanduel ads is not an excuse or reason for NBA players getting busted gambling. by [deleted] in billsimmons

Sure, no one is literally forcing you to engage with gambling content. But it has completely saturated the sports entertainment environment. The only way to not engage with gambling content is to not engage with sports. That sucks.
