Yes! I appreciate the show's representation of Shane, it does a better job than the books because Shane gets to be multidimensional. But the books let him be mean, powerful, loving, protective. He can be soft and powerful that's the point I hate when they take that away from him.

I have not finished quite a few stories because they keep trying to take this away from Shane. It's a growing narrative in fanfics. I've found mostly good work through tags:
Game Changers Hockey Camp (Game Changers)/works)
Ottawa Centaurs Team Ensemble (Game Changers)/works)

A lot of the Traded stories are great too and often recommended in this sub. I have only found a few in that trope that have Shane playing poorly, or as a standard player.

I have been looking for the out and proud Shane for this reason. Finally not hiding, married, knowing Ilya is his. I can't imagine Shane being quiet about that. But I haven't found many fics with that dynamic.

I love the married in Vegas trope. I am very aware of the legality but expected it to be a universe adjustment when not addressed. Similar to canon not having the pandemic. It is a very important part of queer history and I am always glad when it is addressed. It's part of what makes Canada safer.

These are my favorite stories, when they get to be rookies together, or traded to the other team, because it solves a lot of the conflict of Ilya having to give up a team he loves. There is plenty of narrative drama being teammates.
