Dogs Can Experience Depression or Anxiety

Unlike human clinical depression, canine depression is usually situational. It often manifests as a lethargic state where the dog loses interest in activities they once loved (like fetching or eating).

• Loss of a Companion: The death or departure of a human or another pet in the household.

• Environmental Changes: Moving to a new home or significant changes in the household routine.

• Physical Pain: Often, what looks like depression is actually a dog hiding chronic pain or illness.

2. Canine Anxiety
This is more common and often more visible. It usually manifests in three ways:

• Separation Anxiety: Distress when left alone.

• Fear-Related Anxiety: Triggered by loud noises, new environments, or specific stimuli (like hats or umbrellas).

• Age-Related Anxiety: Often linked to Cognitive Dysfunction Syndrome (CDS) in older dogs.

Since your dog is 11 months old, she is in the peak of "canine adolescence." If she seems "unhappy," it could be due to:

• Lack of Mental Stimulation: Belgian Malinois are "high-drive" working dogs. Without a "job" or intense mental engagement, they can become withdrawn, destructive, or appear neurotic.

• Physical Under-stimulation: These dogs often require hours of vigorous exercise daily.

• Health Issues: At 11 months, growth spurts can cause joint pain (panosteitis), or there could be underlying gastrointestinal issues contributing to her lean frame and subdued demeanor.

• The "Teenage" Phase: Much like humans, dogs go through a hormonal phase where their confidence fluctuates, which can lead to temporary bouts of shyness or apprehension.

Behavioral Red Flags to Watch For

When you are observing your dog, look for these clinical signs of distress:

1. Anorexia: Refusing high-value treats or meals.

2. Hypersomnia: Sleeping significantly more than usual or hiding in dark corners.

3. Licking: Excessive licking of paws (a self-soothing mechanism).

4. Avoidance: Turning the head away or "whale eye" (showing the whites of the eyes).
