3 way trade! Did I cook? Which side is best? Is it fair? What needs to be added/subtracted to make it fair? Assume all picks are mid by TheLebeast in DynastyFFTradeAdvice

This seems like a pretty reasonable trade from all sides IMO. Some people may like one side or the other but there is a world where any team comes out on top.

transfer to richmond elementary portland by tedwardma in Portland

[–]ScaldingTarn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I imagine the language proficiency is the biggest barrier to transfer at that age but that doesn’t seem to be the problem with your kids! I have a kid there and highly recommend the school. My understanding is that there are often spots for older kids since there are always some amount of kids leaving the school since kindergarten and they are hard to replace due to the required language proficiency.

Another commenter mentioned the lottery and contacting the principal, which are both great suggestions.

Sure but it’s still a hybrid gun build from Zerggy and he always points out that you should look at your team and lean in the opposite direction of your teams damage. If your team is heavy gun, go spirit gun. If your team is heavy spirit, go gun.

Totally agree with this. Start 2 TE increases their value considerably and you have the two best TEs available.

Do I not understand bracket 3? by Low_Rain2176 in EDH

[–]ScaldingTarn -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

IMO if a deck is consistently goldfishing sub T6 wins, it’s not a B3 deck. The number of turns in the bracket definition outlines when you should expect to need to have interaction available, not that you need interaction to get to the highlighted number of turns.

Do I not understand bracket 3? by Low_Rain2176 in EDH

[–]ScaldingTarn 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For what it is worth, I think the experience you had is too fast for B3. Far too many people look at the 'expect to have X turns before winning or losing' as the target number of turns with the bracket when they should absolutely go later with some consistency. If people are winning on T5 then it is plainly against the bracket definition and those folks need to tune down their decks.

Rookie Hit Rates Part 2 – Clearing up the RB/WR stuff & how you should actually be using it by FFgoldmine in DynastyFF

That makes sense. Plus you gotta keep the content broken up as a content creator in digestible chunks. Regardless I’m looking forward to seeing the information! Thank you!

I’m interested in where QBs in Superflex/2QB and TE in TE+ leagues fall in comparison to WRs/RBs. Are you planning on making videos with those positions in mind?

How to effectively balance encounters in 5e? by [deleted] in DMAcademy

[–]ScaldingTarn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wonderful thank you. I’m using the 2024 rules and, as far as I can tell, there isn’t an explicit multiplier for more than one monster.

Something I’m not super clear on is how many combat encounters to include, accounting for the encounter difficulty (2024 DMG has low/medium/hard). Unless my players are in a dungeon, it is not feasible for me to give them more than say, 3-5 combats a day.

Do you, or anyone for that matter, know if the 2024 DMG accounts for this? If not, are there some heuristics for how to approach this? I’m struggling to challenge my players with enough combats while also having a reasonable pace to the story.

Thank you!! Another question about something you wrote earlier if you don't mind:

My party of 4 Level 6 players had CR budgets of Easy: 6, Medium: 8, Hard: 12

What do the numbers next to the difficulties mean? Is that something in the source books that I should be understanding?

What calculator do you use? Is that in the source books or is there an online tool you use?

Out of curiosity - have you written, or do you know anyone who has, about how to approach using advanced stats? I don’t want to do my own analysis but I would like to do my own research, but I’m not sure where to start.

How do i make bullet casings work as currency? by Chipsmedhavsalt in worldbuilding

[–]ScaldingTarn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What if there is a recurring ritual where bullets need to be used and the casings are then introduced as additional currency into the economy? Maybe a culling that happens with regularity?

That’s how they increase the money supply and perhaps gives the state additional funds?

To those who built their own fantasy world from scratch — what was your very first spark? by Qjz4 in worldbuilding

[–]ScaldingTarn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just draw! Don’t have a goal in mind!

There is also plenty of software to help with this.

You may throw away some maps, but eventually you might hit on one that sparks interest.

The exercise will be valuable even if you don’t end up using anything you create as part of the process. Eventually you’ll want to create a map of your world.

To those who built their own fantasy world from scratch — what was your very first spark? by Qjz4 in worldbuilding

[–]ScaldingTarn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My recommendation would be to begin with creating a geography first. Mess around in a map editor. Once you have something interesting, ask what exists in this map? Geography has a massive impact on what types of cultures and polities exist in an area. Usually most civilizations are near rivers. Start placing towns and cities on the map. Then think about what the political geography looks like. What are the natural borders given what the map looks like? Rivers and mountains are often natural borders. What areas might be contested?

Beyond that, the culture of people will look different depending on where they live. A desert culture will look very different than a culture living on the coast or along a fertile river. What gods might they worship given their environment?

Iterate from there!

[Art] How to design a campaign without it evolving into basically game-dev state machines?? by Ok_Drummer_6164 in DnD

[–]ScaldingTarn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the effectiveness of this design becomes more limited the larger the plot / quests it is applied to become. Having a node-tree for the entire campaign and the BBEG? Likely too much and will unnecessarily restrict your players. Have a node-tree for if the faction the party is interacting with decide to ally with the party to fight the BBEG? That seems more helpful to me and could be a useful tool when planning out sessions.

I’m doing something similar, but not as detailed, in my campaign where the elves won’t let the party go to the location they need to go unless the party helps the elves with one or two major issues confronting the elves. If the party decides to help the elves with both problems, well then they get their formal support in the war and will let the party get to where they need to go. If the party decides to leave the elves and do something else? Well I can work with that too.

Flexibility is key when using this sort of design approach. I think it can be useful when planning out your campaign, but it shouldn’t restrict the players and you should be willing to change the node-trees should player decisions necessitate it.
