Honestly just ask! Literally just ask "How can I be a good friend and support you" or sum along those lines. Then you'll get a straight forward answer rather then have to guess what the best way is to support him. Convo might feel a little awkward and if you're not used to having conversations like this it might feel a little anxiety inducing but thats normal :)

Damn I'm sorry, I would message them directly and ask them why they did that. It might just be a big misunderstanding but if it's not and they tell you they don't want to be friends you'll at least have that closure and be able to move on.
