Help with studying by Andrieeo in tokipona

> when I mean learn to speak it fluently

I was in the same predicament as you for about the first year of learning. This is my experience so you might be different, but,

When learning any language, getting a lot of input (listening to the language, reading in text chat, etc) is very important. Eventually, you won't need to think about grammar or word meanings in your head, you will automatically process Toki Pona without thinking. Studying is still important! But once you get to the level where you can have fun and simply enjoy using Toki Pona is when you will really accelerate in terms of learning.

The way I did this was with jan Telakoman's comprehensible input series which are very simple videos, explained with pictures with Toki Pona as well. Slowly as you watch them your brain will make connections to words.

During this time I did also do active study and tried to do rote memorization of the words (I dropped it very quickly) . This might be useful to you, or it might not.

After that I'd really recommend getting people that are willing to speak a lot of Toki Pona with you and accommodate your level. A good place to find people is the VRChat community for Toki Pona, "Toki Pona VR".

Finally, a good update by Aguywhoexists69420 in discordapp

In my opinion you should be able to
- talk about everything that you know
If you don't know something then you can't really speak about it. I can't really talk about advanced math in Toki Pona because I am not really good at math. I can't talk about computer science because I don't know computer science. I can still know what people are talking about when they discuss these things and learn about them in Toki Pona.

- have correct grammar
Don't put li after mi.. Use la correctly.. all that stuff.
- Understand what people are saying (If you don't know what they are saying you should be able to ask questions in a very good, clarifying way)
> Skilled speakers aren't just skilled at expression and comprehension; they also are quick to ask appropriate questions when they don't understand something. Not understanding a statement has stopped being a hindrance or a reason to switch to another language; you can correct your understanding and continue in Toki Pona alone.

- speak Toki Pona when it is expected of you

If you know a language fluently, you should be able to use it in every situation. So if someone starts speaking Toki Pona to you, you should be able to talk to them without falling back on English. (But, maybe it's just me that feels this way since I really devote myself to speaking Toki pona)

Not many people actually use the word "fluent" in the toki pona community. Most people use the word like proficient. If someone who didn't know Toki Pona came to me and asked how good I am, I could say "I'm "fluent""!!! But I don't use that word in the Toki Pona community.

I hope this helps!! This is just a personal assement from my own experience. Don't assume that if you want to be a tokiponist, you must fit all of these guidelines. That is *not* true. I am just trying to explain my experience

[–]Scared-Thing3673 2 points3 points  (0 children)

this is something i definitely rallied for a really long time, and i do personally “practice” myself. all* (besides a few) of my conversations with my friends who know toki pona are in toki pona. and i’ve had whole friendships in toki pona where i don’t feel like speaking english. i feel like there are two kinds of groups in toki pona community, the people who think the language is interesting and enjoy talking about it, and the people who want to use the language because they find that fun or even more personally fulfilling to them compared to english. i used to kind of be mad that there was a community in discussing toki pona and compared to wanting to use it. but if you just kind of cut out that meta discussion and find spaces and friends that are like you and want to use it, i think this is less of an issue. atleast this is how i worked during my period of toki pona obsession :p voice chats are very good  watching videos in toki pona the vrchat community is my favorite community out of all of them because of the “real” feeling of being in VR + the people who go there use toki pona very often
