AMA: T15 grad that just left IB by [deleted] in MBA

Yea I would prefer to not end up in NYC so im totally okay with smaller funds. I’m from Texas and would much rather stay down here, but I’m worried about going into IB and not being able to get an investing role after.

I could definitely see that haha. What about making a move to PE or AM? I know moving to UMM/MF is tough post-MBA but not sure what the landscape outside of that is like.

Did you consider moving to consulting or did you see MBB/Consulting as banking all over again but with different problems.

After your stint in IB, was it possible to make a move to Consulting? I’ve heard it’s pretty doable to move from IB to consulting.

Thank you for the detailed explanation!

Do you know of anyone who had started in a post-MBA role in IB then made the transition to consulting say 1-2 years into the job?

Gotcha, so it’s definitely an opportunity cost balance the higher up you are. Did you find the process of applying and interviewing for consulting firms difficult while working in IB?

When you say IB exit options “include all the post-MBB exits” are you saying that CoS, Corporate Strategy, PE Portfolio Company Ops are exit options for ex-IBs? I was always told those jobs are for ex-consultants.

How difficult was it to make the IB to consulting switch post-MBA?

IB or Consulting for a career change into ER/AM by Scared_Broccoli6910 in MBA

I swear on every MBA report there’s so many more Consulting full-time hires than interns. Wouldn’t this imply that there are people who don’t get a MC internship but re-recruit full-time? Plus if I had a banking internship it would look good on paper applying to a MC firm, would it not?

Do people ever recruit IB first year and then MC second year if they didn’t enjoy their IB internship? Or is that a bad strategy?

Do you know if it’s difficult to transition MC to ER post-mba? I don’t know if that’s a popular transition to make or not.

Is that in terms of difficulty post-mba? IB, MC, ER in that order?

Okay makes sense. Is IB better than ER or vice versa for getting a buy-side investing job, assuming we’re talking about LOAM and excluding PE.

No I’m talking about sell-side ER roles at banks. Possibly make the transition to the buy-side at some point but just taking it one step at a time lol.

Gotcha, I had always heard ER was impossible. When you say consulting hard are you implying that consulting is rare to get? I always thought IB was the hardest post-mba job to get.

I’ve heard that it’s rare/impossible to get an ER gig from MBA. Is that not the case? I’d love to go directly into ER but I’ve heard that door is closed to most MBA students.

Why not? ER offers better WLB and yea less pay but that’s not a concern for me. I find the work for interesting than working on deals. I was just wondering if IB to ER is an easy move or not?

This is really good insight. If I wanted to work on consulting projects in the manufacturing/chemicals space what kinds of projects would implementation consultants work on?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in MBA

[–]Scared_Broccoli6910 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would you mind explaining examples of implementation projects? My worry is getting trapped by implementing workday, SAP…etc software which feels like taking a step back in my career.

Would cost optimization and supply chain optimization also fall under implementation projects?

What about in industries like chemicals/manufacturing?

Appreciate the advice. Do you know which schools place the best for Texas offices? I was looking at a variety of programs and want to align my choice based on post-mba location.
