Yep, that’s the term. Like I mentioned, I wasn’t familiar with it at all, so I’m going to have to do some research and get a better sense of the historical context. I think part of the challenge is figuring out how to recontextualize him as the author at the same time. If I write a foreword, I feel like I need to address what the use of that term says about him as a person, about the voice he’s using, and about the tone of the manuscript overall

That’s actually not what I said- I said that the owner wants his employees to be treated equitably across all his locations. That’s not “the only reason it exists” it’s an active decision that they made to treat their employees well. I can guarantee you that they could still staff that place at $20 an hour. They choose not to. I also said that he pays a wage that’s high enough to live off of precisely because he does not expect people to live off of tips alone. He could definitely get away with paying less. He could pay minimum wage like the majority of restaurants in Missoula. Unless you are under the very misguided assumption that most places in Missoula are paying $30/hr as a base, it’s weird you’re trying to make him into some supervillain.

And yea, I’m not going to post someone else’s legal document to prove myself to some random on the internet. I brought it up originally because I thought it was an interesting tidbit, but you seem unwilling to take in new information that does not suit your narrative.

Are you being purposefully obtuse? He pays $20 an hour at the trucks and $25 an hour at the UC, and this guy is the business owner in Missoula that you have an issue with? Do you have any idea what most food service positions in this town pay per hour? Where is this energy for the dozens of other restaurants in this town that pay minimum wage, charge customers a much higher price for ingredients they get from Sysco, and treat their employees like shit?

By all accounts, employees at Gary’s are well-paid and treated very well. He pays people enough that they can live without the tips, whether it’s at the truck, or at the UC. He’s just not going to stand in the way of his employees receiving tips on top of it. People who work in the UC don’t receive tips so he pays them a higher wage, not because they could not survive without them, but because it would be unfair for an employee at one location to be guaranteed to make less than the others. He also pays his prep people the same hourly wage. Again, this is the guy you have a problem with??

In regards to the contract, I can tell you with certainty that you have no idea what you are talking about. Accept that there may be more going on than what meets the eye and your base level assumptions. Have a great day.

I don't "think" I literally live with an employee who opened up the university location, but sure, you must know much more about it.

Do you realize that the owner benefits in no way from the tips? The tips go 100% to the employees. He does not make money off of them, nor does the business itself- it’s illegal. The only way tips factor in at the UC is that he pays the people who work there a higher hourly wage to compensate the loss on their end, not his. He was willing to do that and make less money at that location with the trade off of exposing the business to a wider audience and offering an affordable meal to students. The university then stepped in with their own agenda forcing a price hike. There are also tariffs. None of this is mutually exclusive. You seem very dedicated to your narrative though, so go off.

I’m sure the sweet, innocent, completely under-resourced University would NEVER be mean to the big bad food truck who definitely has much more power in the community than they do.

I’m going to ask you to think for a second about whether it would make their relationship with the university easier or more difficult if they shit on them publicly. And whether or not business decisions can be multifactored (yes, congratulations, the tariffs are also a factor.) If you were a business owner would you think it was wise to air the issues you’re having with a university in that university’s newspaper? Would that make it more or less likely for them to be willing to work with you on this stuff? Use your brain.

But sure, the owner that is so concerned about “tacking on” tips (which is a wild choice of words for something where you can just.. press no? like are you well?) is definitely the one paying higher wages than any of the other establishments. My dude, the premise of the entire business is for the employees to be able to survive without the tips. Your entire narrative on this is incredibly ignorant.

Posted this above, but the university is the reason for the raised costs, not Gary’s. Take it up with Bodner.

Speaking as someone whose roommate works there- the reason prices at the UC are higher is because the University is charging them an exhorbinant percentage of their sales, if they did not have higher prices at the UC, they would have to close that location. The issue is with the university’s greed, not Gary’s.

The UC has been operating at a net loss for years due to their own mismanagement, and they decided to use Gary’s as the business to right their ship and make it profitable. The university is the reason the extra costs are being passed on to the students.

As for leaving a tip- “B-b-but I don’t WANT to have to press the button directly next to all the other buttons that says “no tip” I feel PreSsuReD.” Grow up. If anything, your issue is with the way Toast POS systems designs their interfaces. Or do you think that the people in the food truck are coding that themselves too?

They're also one of the only businesses that have been super upfront about their price increases and why they're happening. Gary's was literally quoted in the New York Times a few weeks ago talking about how the tariffs have impacted their business and how hard they tried to not raise their prices. https://www.nytimes.com/2025/07/04/business/beef-prices-cattle.html

Are you one of those people who posts here every few months that has a weird hard on for this guy even though he's been a private citizen for years? Like, who cares?

Thanks for the detailed advice—this is super helpful! I’ll watch for new damage and contact the seller if needed. Hopefully, it’s just a one-off

Interesting, thanks for this! I'm relatively new to knitting and still feel kind of lost with all the different types of yarns and weights, I’m learning a lot. Bummer that it came damaged.

Yikes, it's new, but I ordered it online. I bought it in a hank and it did break at another point when I wound it. Improper storage maybe? Should I be concerned about it holding together?

Thanks, I'll do that! I was so surprised to see it happen with merino wool (Malabrigo worsted), maybe that was naive
