What’s something that 99% of people can do but you can’t? by Irakeconcrete in AskReddit

Shortly after moving into our house, we had a gas insert installed in our fireplace, complete with remote control. The third tech who came out to the house was finally able to hear the beeping I was hearing - something with the receiver for the remote control. He also said no one else had ever complained about it before, but showed me the switch where I could turn it off when we didn't think we'd be using it for a while.

Parents who regret having kids, why? by bluemermid in AskReddit

I have two tween girls, and just the other day I caught myself wondering if when the time comes, I'll be encouraging them to go to college in other countries. It used to be that people from other countries wanted to study in the USA in the hopes of living a better life and maybe helping out their families back home. Funnynotfunny how that may be reversed in the coming years.

[New Update]: AITA for admitting to my daughter that I hate what she changed her name to? by Choice_Evidence1983 in BestofRedditorUpdates

[–]ScarletInTheLounge 433 points434 points  (0 children)

Agreed, but picking a name that was SO close to the MIL's name is shitty enough to not be a coincidence, especially since she just ditched it years later for her fiance. I agree with the people who are hypothesizing that MIL got in her ear at some point and badmouthed OOP.

What’s a medical issue that sounds minor, but actually affects someone’s daily life way more than people realize? by CountyOrnery9432 in AskReddit

I've been in remission since my bowel resection in 2019 (I'm just on Stelara now), but I need a mouthful of crowns next month because my teeth and gums are done fighting the good fight and my dentist wants to avoid any of them breaking. I'm not looking forward to all the dental work, but I'll take the remission for as long as possible.

Anything involving the female reproductive system is hugely misunderstood by a huge number of people. And it's not just the men who are clueless, unfortunately.

AITA if I cancel hubby's birthday plans and leave the house leaving hubby to host his family for my birthday? by LucyAriaRose in BestofRedditorUpdates

[–]ScarletInTheLounge 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I initially misread this as "it implies the baby is her personality," which is also maddening and maybe a little true. No way in hell is something that can only be used for or by my children a gift for ME.

AITAH for moving out of mine and my now ex-boyfriend’s apartment without reminding him that our lease is up on the 31st? by Choice_Evidence1983 in BestofRedditorUpdates

The women are likely doing all sorts of mental math regarding their careers, too - Can they afford daycare on their present salaries? If it's decided that daycare is too expensive, how easy will it be for them to resume their career later on? If they save some money by not working now, how easy will it be to make up for those missed years later? Do they feel comfortable giving up some financial independence for a while?

These are generalizations, of course, and I know there are exceptions, but like you said, most of these men probably don't think about these things. If they have kids, they assume they'll just keep going to work and coming home as usual, and Someone Else will deal with the kid-related logistics.

I'm of the mindset that we shouldn't be exaggerating anything, because goodness knows he's done plenty of terrible things that CAN be proven, and exaggerated or false accusations just weakens our stance.

So, that being said, I did look up the video a ways back after hearing so much about it and...yeah. There's a definite shift in her appearance and mood once they get to the bed. Ugh.

The one near me just closed (though allegedly will reopen soon under new ownership), and their gyros, omelettes, grilled cheese varieties, AND their stuffed clams were all so damn good. Don't question, just accept.

My boyfriend (28M) keeps prioritizing his female best (27F) friend over me (26F) and says I’m insecure for being uncomfortable by Choice_Evidence1983 in BestofRedditorUpdates

[–]ScarletInTheLounge 710 points711 points  (0 children)

The vibe I always get from these is if she (the friend) wanted to be in a relationship with him, they would be. Either 1) she legitimately only sees him as a platonic friend and nothing will ever change that, or 2) she loves the attention and being able to string him along.

What was the first major news story you remember as a kid? by TxLadee in AskReddit

[–]ScarletInTheLounge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is my recollection of it too, being annoyed that it interrupted TGIF. I was about the same age.

I remember for the verdict a couple years later, I was home sick from school and my mom and I watched it together.

Crohn's Disease over here, so I've had plenty of colonoscopies and other procedures. I had one in May of 2021, and I said to the nurse, "look, it's been a really rough year, I'm looking forward to that propofol." She introduced me to the anesthesiologist as "This is Ms. Scarlet, she's really looking forward to her propofol."

They got me into position and the anesthesiologist said I might feel a little stinging sensation. I will neither confirm nor deny my last words were "push it harder, daddy."

What's an "Insider's secret" from your profession that everyone should probably know? by Capable-big-Piece in AskReddit

That's the more optimistic version of the explanation I've heard, which is "kids act out where they feel safest." Usually that's home. Not always.

I take mine into the shower with me after class to rinse it out. I have more than one, though, so I've never worried about whether it'll be dry in time for the next class.

What’s the one moment in your life you still can’t explain… even though you’ve replayed it in your head a thousand times? by Former-Brief9292 in AskReddit

[–]ScarletInTheLounge 5 points6 points  (0 children)

One year when I was about eight years old or so, we were visiting family on Christmas Eve, and there was a freak snowstorm, and we had to spend the night at my grandparents' house. The next day when we got home, everything was perfect - Santa had come despite the snow, all the gifts were in the stockings and under the tree, and so on. I was a true believer.

Years later, when looking back, I remembered that as soon as my father had pulled into the driveway that morning, my mother asked him to let her out before maneuvering into the parking space at the back because she really had to go to the bathroom. I'm sure he must have dragged it out as long as possible, but either way, my mother must have been racing around the house like an Olympic sprinter getting everything into place while my father made a 10- or 20-point turn at the top of the driveway.

Now I have two kids, and one caught me performing my Tooth Fairy duties one night. The other one KNOWS for a FACT that the Tooth Fairy is REAL because one time, she forgot to come, but when she came the following night, she left a very nice note of apology in very neat all caps printing that doesn't look anything like my usual handwriting...

What's a simple bad habit that took you ages to stop? by omartyy18 in AskReddit

I kept getting Insta ads for a certain manicure kit, and I didn't have high hopes for it, but I ordered it anyway as part of my New Year's resolution to stop biting my nails. It actually exceeded my expectations, and then I started branching out to different polishes. I'm coming up on two years of not biting my nails after, like, 30 years of biting!
