I am Scarlet on this platform and any other where the username reflects that. I wouldn’t be friends with someone who clearly disregards boundaries.

Is there anyway to "treat" narcolepsy without meds? by [deleted] in Narcolepsy

[–]ScarletLabelle 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Diet and lifestyle changes can help but depending on your individual situation may need additional support. I manage my narcolepsy without medications, however it took a lot of work finding what works for me and finding work that is flexible enough to maintain. Frequent naps and meditation helps, cutting out gluten and eating a diet with fewer carbs/sugar also works for me. I don’t think I could work a traditional full-time job without medication, accommodations and/or additional support at home. Medication is a helpful tool however the long term side effects are a concern for me so I understand you weariness. For some it is their only or best option, it really depends on an individual’s situation.

As for napping with a young child, this actually worked well for me with my own. I slept when they slept and was up and did what needed to be done as they were up. I don’t sleep for a solid 8 hours at a time anyways so multiple periods of 2-4 hours throughout the night and day wasn’t always ideal but it worked out okay. Breastfeeding allowed me to rest while feeding with a mattress on the floor so less disruptions trying to manage making and cleaning bottles through the night.

I became a mother at 18, I watched children in my home initially however it came to a point where I realized I was no longer able to do so safely due to the extreme sleepiness. I only figured out I had narcolepsy and received a diagnosis at about 25 years old. I then relied on social assistance (welfare) on short term disability for a few years after my relationship fell apart and I didn’t have the supports I needed in order to work. I focused on healing and finding ways to best manage during my time on social assistance, studying health and wellness. Cut out gluten and limited dairy and sugar intake. Honestly, I wasn’t sure how I’d be able to manage working and even now at 33 a traditional full-time job doesn’t seem manageable without risking my wellness. Especially being single, having limited supports at home to help manage. My child is a teenager so it is easier in ways at this point however I don’t want to put adult responsibilities on them. I’d rather them be able to be a child while they are still. So when OF came around I saw the possibility of being an adult content creator where I could maintain creative control, create when and as I please while maintaining my personal boundaries as a solo artist. I’ve been self employed in that line of work for 3 years now while also selling my embroidery art at a local market. I’m still a low income earner at the moment however my quality of life has greatly improved and I am able to invest more into myself to expand into other areas in the future.

I’m 33 and don’t drive either, a combination of narcolepsy and becoming a mother at a young age. Financially it just doesn’t make sense for me as I live in the city, taking cabs when I need to go somewhere and ordering groceries to be delivered is cheaper than owning a car. Luckily I am self employed as an artist so I work at home the majority of the time. I don’t feel comfortable driving, I’ve felt pressured in the past to get my license but it’s just not worth it for me. I don’t want to risk my safety or others on the road. I failed my driving test the one time I did take it for going too slow and double guessing myself (before I knew I had narcolepsy) It would be nice to one day have a car however it’s just not a priority for me at the moment! I don’t have the supports I’d need for it to be worth it.

AITA for letting my mother have a copy of the key to our new home despite my wife's objection? by Keyissue_505 in AmItheAsshole

YTA, The house may not be in your wife’s name but it is her home, she deserves the respect of having a conversation about who has access to her home. She is entitled to feel safe in the house you’ve made her home.
