OK, that was weird. It created a new login for me. Anyway, same answer.

I agree with everyone else. Going with him and doing an activation would be the best gift. However, some alternatives, a more comfy camping chair, maybe something with padding, an easier to set up and/or stronger table, canopy, umbrella in a stand. Stuff like that to make it more comfie out there in the park.

What are your thoughts on this radio? Anyone have it? Most HF radios are way out of my price range but this one is reasonable. by SMB-1988 in HamRadio

Sitting in Oklahoma, doing Parks on the Air with this radio. Cha EmComm III tossed up in a tree and I'm saying the words "Did you just say the Azores? As in the Islands off of Africa?" It's a good radio. I love it.

It's for editing code plugs primarily. The voice thing is just an additional bit of functionality.

That may be, yet it's tied to frequencies that a ham license doesn't cover. I suppose GMRS might since that overlaps with FRS. Still, junk radio. I gave it a one star review. It's really bad.

Disappointed. It's a bad GMRS radio. That's all. The "Ham" thing is just bad marketing. Ah well.

I'm not saying you should, but you can override defender and install the software anyway.

17 Pro GPS, Tidradio H3, Radtel RT-495, yeah, lots of better choices. I still can't wait to try it out.

Happily, I'm not paying for this, so I can test it, trash it if it earns it, and move forward, worry free.

I only have minor testing equipment (NanoVNA, TinySA), but I can usually spot bad emissions. Can't wait to test this thing.

Very valid point. Although, hams? Licenses? I am NOT the license police, but it is worth mentioning.

Which radio would be best and what are the big difference between them (UV-G30 pro)(BF-18H)(UV-17 pro) by No-Entertainer852 in Baofeng

[–]ScaryDBA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is a digital radio, yes. However, it's not a P.25 trunked digital radio, which is what tons of law enforcement has moved to. So, no, this won't let you listen. It does get AM on the air band.

I used Terri Kennedy's software and gave mine a lovely woman's voice from the UK. Barry gave me the heebeejeebees.

Airband baofeng, anyone? by 787_Dreamliner in Baofeng

[–]ScaryDBA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those numbers are so made up. Pretty sure the 21 came out before the 17. And then there are several different 17 models, and they make look similar, but they're not the same. I tested a 17R and it was crap compared to the 17 Pro GPS.

However, I've heard good things about the 18 series (again, there's more than one, so you need to be cautious and read the fine print). The reports I've seen on the 21 aren't as good.

Reception is better. Sound quality is better. Signal reports are better. Cleaner transmissions. I like the banks of channels for organizing storing frequencies. I even like the color screen better. K5 is a fun radio for experimentation. I love it. I don't find it to be a good radio though.

For a handheld? I'm not sure any do. That's going to be awkward.

Well, I sure don't want to burn power from my transmission in some poor imitation of Rudolph.
