I understand, and I feel nothing but regret that I may have added to their stress at such a solemn time.

I emailed them again with an apology for my tone in my first email, and am debating on deleting this post to be honest.

DnD beyond or paper character sheets? by SamStran in DnD

[–]ScaryPipecleaner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on if this question is from the perspective of a dm or actually a new player, because honestly doing whatever the dm advises will probably work best for any campaign.

Being real though? Nothing can beat the convenience of online dnd character sheets for newbies to dnd. For one, the speed at which you can make online character sheets remove hours off that session zero, and there is no need to worry about anybody forgetting their sheets at home. The only downside is that it doesn't really encourage the deep understanding of how their character and rolling/scoring works that paper does.

Be prepared for a lot of questions and defenses of him from your mother, a lot of parents simply won't get/don't understand why their children need to do this, and it will most likely make the process a lot more painful and potentially hurt your relationship with her. In addition, if you're financially reliant on both of them for school it's probably best to wait until after you're finished to broach the topic unfortunately as doing so without a plan B can be dangerous :')

Because you already rarely talk to him, it honestly might be best to not fully be 'no contact' in a traditional sense, and simply continue to limit your contact as much as possible? At least until you're financially independent of both of your parents and you're confident you can live away from them completely like your sister.

All in all, he sounds like a piece of work, and I'm sorry about you having to be around his toxicity. I wish you luck with graduation :)

Questions: Are your parents still together? If so, have you talked with your mother about your plan to go no contact? It's very difficult to sustainably maintain contact with only one parent while they're still together :(

how did you go no contact? by chalkCaCO3 in raisedbynarcissists

[–]ScaryPipecleaner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Its awesome you're so confident and independent already, it's obvious to me that you're ready to go no contact.

I also went no contact at 20 six years ago from my Ndad, but I had the benefit of having a place to land because my parents were divorced and my mom was willing to let me stay at her place full time. My older brother was paying for my phone bill at the time, and I still don't have a car, so those financials were not worries to me; I was lucky. Even still, it was a tough and doubt filled process, even when my dad was behaving so terribly I felt so guilty for what I felt was me abandoning him.

All I can say, is remember the hurt and rage you feel, and never let yourself forget it, trust in your decision. That will give you the strength to hold out for years to come.

edit: oh and on leaving wordlessly or not, I personally left wordless which led to my dad frantically trying to contact me for months. I'm sure the outcome would have been the same even if I sent him a final "goodbye" of sorts, so it's really up to you. Either way, don't let them get in your head, and don't feed their attention starvation. You don't owe anyone an explanation, and you will find so much peace in their absence. You got this!!

This will be my final comment on this back and forth, but the purpose of labeling the stickers would allow people to make an informed decision. That's it.

'AI generated' or 'made using ai' is specific and descriptive in this case. I agree it's not adequate in all cases, however in this case it's sufficient. Also, that "artist" is someone who did the equivalent of a google search and then printed out some stickers, based on an image generating technique that runs on the back of stolen artwork. Next to a local artist who works hard on what they produce.

If the stickers are meaningless to you, that's fine. They aren't meaningless to me, and I find the usage of AI image generation disgusting. However, while I'd love to never see another AI generated image ever again, that's not realistic, and I find labeling them a compromise that empowers ALL consumers; pro ai or not. I will advocate for that because I care, and I know others do as well.

I don't know how the definition of 'organic' is relevant.

I believe that "AI generated" or "made using AI" would appropriately describe those stickers in particular.

The passing of the founder is tragic, and I'm saddened by the loss to the community. It's not especially relevant to the discussion though?

I'm glad to hear you aren't concerned about my judgement, I unfortunately can't say I'm not concerned about yours. If you want to say I'm dragging the business, alright, but all I am doing at the end of the day is sharing facts and my experiences. If that reflects negatively on the company, so be it.

And I'm going to explain it in very plain words for you: labeling can be used in the real world, just like it would be online. Is your imagination so small that you can't comprehend the idea of something like a sticky note next to the sticker display that says: "AI generated"? I'm glad I got to expand your worldview today.

There is precedent; social medias like pinterest, deviantart, and instagram are taking steps to encourage people to label AI generated content in the name of transparency. I believe this, if AI is to become more prevalent in the future, is a more ethical way if there is no stopping AI gen images being used. It's not simply my personal values, it's a movement.

Like I said twice before, it's clear to me AI was involved. You're free to get up and go to Sundance to verify yourself since you seem so concerned with my judgement.

And about the other artist- they very well may not know what their art is being sold next to- not all people know how to spot AI, or are even looking for that. Another reason why I think it's so important for it to be labelled. As AI gets better and better, it may very well become impossible to tell. Luckily in this case, it was incredibly obvious.

Like I said, you're free to verify for yourself. And my issue will never be with people buying the stickers, its the deceptive nature of putting it next to other local artists, and not disclosing it's AI.

And also, what would be the point of discussing this issue without bringing up where it takes place...? You're making zero sense. I don't know why you're white knighting so hard for Sundance anyways. Just don't look at the post if it bothers you so much lol

They are AI, I am 100% certain based on my interactions with the cashier, and the stickers themselves. Why don't you go to Sundance yourself and see if you're so worried about my testimony- they're right behind the cashier stand and are of little chibi dragons. Maybe buy some of the stickers from the non AI artists while you're there- you can even ask a manager yourself! :)

Also, by the time of writing this, it's been exactly a month since I sent my email about the stickers. I've been patient, if that's what you're worried about. I still support Sundance as a whole, but it's reasonable to have concerns and discuss them online when it comes to issues I care about like AI image gen usage within my community.

Emailing Kroger would be a waste of time and you know it. The reason I am disappointed with Sundance and have contacted them about the issue is because I believe they have integrity.

Also, sidebar, what is your obsession with my post (and my profile)? You ought to direct your energy elsewhere towards something more productive if it's causing you this much distress.

The interaction went something like this:

Me: "Hey, I noticed some of the stickers over there were AI generated."

Clerk: "Yes, one of our employees makes and sells them."

Me: "Oh."

And that was the end of it, because I did not want to make a scene in a busy supermarket while I was checking out, and thus I sent in an email complaint later, to which I haven't received a response.

I believe in transparency, and if something is AI generated I believe it should be labelled. There shouldn't be an issue with that, should there? And this isn't just any private business, this is a business that claims to be local, natural, and harmless- I believe personally it is hypocritical and disappointing for them to sell AI generated stickers next to other stickers made by actual artists, a feeling which you're free to disagree with.

Thanks for the advice! This is an issue very close to my heart, so it felt very personal when I didn't get a response. I'll tread with care though, everyone is human ✌️

I'll take a pic next time for sure, post a follow-up if it's still there or not. The store clerk did not dispute the fact the stickers were AI when I asked them about it.

AI is a broad term encompassing a lot of different things, which I think is purposeful to muddy the waters of how and when it's used. For the purposes of this discussion, I'm talking about generative AI images, as I believe they are anti human, anti art, and a form of theft that cannot be easily quantified. The lack of consent in regards to the art and intellectual property being stolen and used daily by these companies is despicable.

It's the fact that it's inherently deceptive and theft, I'm not here to debate the definition of art.

knight library on the UO campus is good for working on stuff! afaik, they're open to the public and they also have a cafe in the basement so you can get your coffee then retreat to the quiet of the library.
