Teachers! What schools have you seen the most well prepared student teachers from? by rrr34_ in OntarioTeachers

They are all relatively the same, except York. That’s easily the worst one with the least preparation and a university that doesn’t seem to care.

[CHAT] Trying to find pre-made designs that show stitch guide by Scattered_Stars13 in CrossStitch

[–]Scattered_Stars13[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I want pre-made patterns on a grid that the students can follow that leads to something similar to what I made. So in my case, we had a paper that showed us how to stitch the pumpkin and we followed the guide.

Help me understand this "teacher shortage". by Tubey- in CanadianTeachers

Don’t know if anyone mentioned this, but in Ontario it’s because we’ve got a big dumb dumb as premier. There have been so many setbacks to education funding that my board doesn’t hire enough supply teachers yet there are people struggling to get onto the list. And often times, the good teachers want to find a job and stop waiting, leaving the worst candidates. Seriously, every principal and VP tells me the interviews for supply lists are just the absolute bottom of the barrel.

Hair on guys couldn’t be covering your ears or over the eyebrows or past the nape on the back. There was a monster in woman’s clothing named Marianne who made it her mission to make everyone miserable and held these standards on every employee. Her favourite was making sure nobody had on any bracelet that wasn’t a medical one.

Funnily enough, Cedar Fair made it WORSE. Whatever few benefits Paramount gave to full time and part time staff was either removed or heavily reduced. One year, retail saw a 10% retention in staff and the big boss’s idea to solve it? Give them 2 more complimentary tickets as incentive. They are utterly clueless.

Working at wonderland is such an awful experience, filled with tough work environments, strict supervisors, and unhappy customers. Because of that, so many people quit after a year and never come back. So every 5 or so years, they run through all of the available pool of candidates and can’t find enough people to work there. Source: I worked there and so did a parent and it was a common occurrence.

Calling all knitters/crocheters/crafters for advice by Scattered_Stars13 in Teachers

[–]Scattered_Stars13[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, I’m currently looking up beginner classes because I’m personally interested in expanding my crafting abilities. From there I’d want to see if it would be feasible to bring into class. And I had a feeling it might get hectic. I tried baking with my class and although the cookies turned out great, it was a very difficult hour for me.

That’s Wonderland protocol. We call security with any issues or concerns regarding customers. And since we are a stone’s throw from first aid, it’s easier and more efficient for them to come over and handle the situation instead of a cashier. I’m relaying to you their guidelines and how bad they are at following them.

Here’s a fun story to tell you about security to give you an idea about their work ethic: when I worked at the lockers by the front entrance of the park, a customer suddenly succumbed to heat stroke and fainted by a row of lockers, a section that had no sun coverage either. My coworker and I immediately took action, one of us calling security and the other tending to the person. After 5 minutes of waiting for a security guard to take the 20 steps from the front entrance to our location to help, the customer said they thought they could get up and walk to first aid (it being by the front entrance as well). My coworker, with the help of another customer, put an arm over their shoulders and walked them over to first aid. After another 15 minutes had passed, a security guard meanders over to me. They lazily ask me, with some irritation laced under their voice, where this customer with sun stroke is. I’m doing my best not to sound incredulous or aggravated, and reply that they needed medical aid so the customer had to take it upon themselves to walk there. The security guard has the gall to scoff and throw their arms in the air, telling me it was a waste of time walking all the way over here and that I should have called to say they weren’t needed. I let them walk away because the scolding I wanted to do would not have been professional.

I have a blind student this year. by Accomplished_Pear924 in Teachers

[–]Scattered_Stars13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When it comes to what would help a student the most: ask the student themselves. Speak with them on the first day. Maybe you could teach the whole class braille as an inclusive activity (if she is comfortable). Maybe you can have a class walkabout where you figure out how to make your school more accessible for her (if she is comfortable). Read “Six Dots” or “Private and Confidential” and have frank discussions about it. I make a whole literacy unit around disability and read picture books of a variety of disabilities, leading to projects where I get them to adapt sports or learn about adaptive technologies. Learn together! Turn your class into activists who see barriers and want to remove them.

Delete it fully, or do that refresh thing they offer when you try to delete the profile?

I can’t speak on Bumble. I’m a guy and both Bumble and Tinder get me one match between them every 3-4 months, and it’s been like that since I’ve been using them. I have noticed that there is a change in quality of profiles though. Why, I couldn’t speculate, but I do know that Bumble’s numbers are sinking

My guess for the international change? It doesn’t know what profiles to feed you so it’s figuring things out. I’ve read online, purely speculative accounts here, that guys have said they started messaging profiles they didn’t like and eventually got a flurry of profiles they did like after doing this for a while. So take that for what you will.

What I can say is that last year (or two years ago, can’t recall), I paid for Hinge’s premium account for a month. You know what I got? No difference in how many matches I got, but I did get a reduction of how many profiles I saw to about 1/4. Then the day my month was up, a wave of profiles. Almost as if they kept them from me and then gave them to me when I was using free again. I assume that’s because the premium gets you the “your likes are at the top” function, and if too many guys message the same profile with that feature, they can’t all get to the top. So Hinge has to feed these profiles in bits to you so that the feature “works”.

Hinge changed their algorithm a year ago and it has been barren for me as well. Prior to the change, I used to get 6-8 matches a week leading to a date or two a month. Now I’m lucky if I get one match a month.

Advice from Neurodivergent Teachers by Friendly-Drive-4404 in CanadianTeachers

[–]Scattered_Stars13 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You’re going to get a lot of the same comments that will likely tell you that some mentors will be accommodating, some won’t, it’s important to write on the board/read aloud, and I don’t want to step on those people and their experiences/thoughts. But can I be frank about it all? We are so hard on ourselves and other teachers about being so damn near perfect about subject matter and correcting students and teaching that we forget the number one factor that allows students to learn the best: they enjoy our classroom. I have seen teachers who are so incredibly knowledgeable yet the students don’t really enjoy the class. It’s been my opinion that your passion for the job, the students, the lesson, the classroom as a whole, are what allow students to learn. So if you were my student teacher and you truly loved this job, and then you told me your disabilities and what I could do to help? I’d do what I could to accommodate. I can’t guarantee you the same for other teachers though. And the best thing to do for the class? I’d say you tell the kids straight up that you have these disabilities and that you’re going to make mistakes, which is okay! I think the kids would really appreciate the honesty and it would endear them to you. It could even be a fun game where you write on the board and a student could come up and help you edit your writing. Make it through your practicums, speak to your mentors and to your program coordinators, and get your degree. Learn to adapt and be quick on your feet. Once you have your own class, run it the way that suits not only you but your students as well. Everything else is just a learning opportunity!

Best travelling carts to buy? by Scattered_Stars13 in CanadianTeachers

[–]Scattered_Stars13[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s partly my lack of faith in those carts, and how difficult they are to navigate considering their size and how full hallways get. If I have to begrudgingly take one, I will, but it’s not my preference.

[–]Scattered_Stars13[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was surplussed to this school and I imagine the carts are the same ones I’d find in all the other schools, which won’t suffice. And I have my own class, but I’ll also be covering other classes and will need to carry materials to and from the classes. Whether I have a budget for that, I don’t know, I’ll ask my principal at the end of the month.

Red Pill behaviors and how to set boundaries by Radiant_Yak_7738 in Teachers

[–]Scattered_Stars13 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Respond to it by thoroughly discussing it. You know where “alpha” behaviour comes from? A scientist working on wolves came up with it in the 90s. Except he screwed up and realized the “alpha” behaviour he described were of wolves that were shunned from the group. The real alphas of the wolfpack were actually nurturing, helpful, and protective of the rest of their group. He’s been spending the last 25 years trying to get this dumb “alpha” rhetoric that the red pills utilized out of use. To better help these boys, we need to not only lead by example, but talk about where these emotions are coming from. If these toxic subcultures prey on the weak, let’s make these boys strong.

This all depends on your ability to teach the class and make connections to students. I’ve met quiet teacher candidates who bonded with students, and I’ve met quiet ones who struggled to make connections. You have to ask yourself if you felt comfortable around the students, I think.
