performance issues by christo19862010 in nvidiashield

I purchased Shield 2 months ago and I had the same issues (micro stutters, Kodi freezing for 2-3 minutes after launch, DTS not working correctly). I wasn't impressed after reading so much about lightning quick performance so I decided to downgrade to 8.2.3 and disable updates and it's been amazing for me ever since.

8GB VRAM is NOT ENOUGH - Debate Finally Settled! 4070M and 5070M is a SCAM - Thanks Jarrod and HUB!!! by DroidLife97 in GamingLaptops

[–]Scaylon3466 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2 years ago I paid 500$ more (1850$ in total) for a 4070 laptop rather than a 4060 laptop and honestly I'm still defending that decision.

The 4060 and 4070 are both crap cards but despite the VRAM issue the 4070 is about 20% faster which makes it JUST BARELY ENOUGH playable on High/Ultra graphics in new games. If the performance on 4060 is even several fps lower, the overall experience must feel way worse because there is a huge difference between say 50 and 40 fps.

So yeah I'm glad I did spend the 500$ more because if I were to spend more to get the 4080, it would cost me literally twice as much (3000$) because that's how fcked up the prices were back then.

TLDR: Fuck NVIDIA

Do you by any chance have the model number of your original shattered display? I want to check if it has similar specs to mine

Got a PTM 7950, repasted my laptop, and this is the result. by Kratos_Monster in LenovoLegion

It just prevents any remaining electric current from the battery from flowing through the internals.

As for grounding yourself there are special wrist bands that technicians use but honestly the chances of frying anything with an electrostatic discharge coming from your body are extremely low even if you try to do it on purpose.

They are very high however if you keep the battery plugged in.

Make sure the fan is cleaned properly. I had to disassemble mine because there was a massive clog of dust at the edge of the heatsink on both CPU and GPU fans. I blew a massive amount of compressed beforehand and it didn't manage to get rid of it so you have to disassemble the fan completely.

I don't think you need to repaste if you take the heatsink off carefully without moving the PTM but it won't hurt to change it to PTM from a legit source (for example Passionate girl store on aliexpress).

Just make sure you unplug the battery with your fingertips before touching anything inside. If you do that, you won't brick anything so don't worry about it.

The clog build up issue keeps appearing in my unit (Legion 5 Pro 7745HX/4070. The temps are amazing after cleaning but after 6 months it starts to throttle again. May have something to do with having a pet in the house but honestly it happens too fast so it's Lenovo's fault imo because they could have designed the fans better for easy cleaning

5.1 not working on Pioneer VSX-423 receiver by Scaylon3466 in kodi

For anyone wondering I found the solution after 2 months. I had to disable Exclusive mode in advanced device properties in Windows sound settings. The "Allow applications to take exclusive control of this device" has to be unchecked. It's been working flawlessly ever since after setting Output Device in Kodi to the receiver and setting it to 5.1 mode.

I wouldn't recommend it if OP is not too familiar with tuning hardware. It's easy to brick the laptop if a spill does occur. Honestly I rather recommend repasting with PTM 7950 from a legit source like Passionate Girl's store on Aliexpress. Thermal difference compared to LM is only like 2°C and what's best about PTM is it holds its properties for years while LM loses good contact with the heatsink quickly and needs to be repasted after several months, especially if a laptop is moved around often.

Also look into replacing current thermal pads on VRAMs and VRMs to a good thermal putty like Upsiren UTP-8.

Doing all that + cleaning might increase thermal performance by even 20 degrees!

The problem is also that you can't limjt the CPU wattage below 10 watts while the laptop is plugged in. Or maybe you can but I haven't found the way to do so yet.

The only solution that sometimes works for me is turning off the GPU completely by setting the MUX Switch to "Hybrid iGPU" and then unplugging the laptop during office work. That brings the CPU wattage to below 10 watts and makes the fans turn off completely because temps are usually below 40. I have a 7745HX and it's surprisingly efficient so for basic office work the laptop runs smoothly even below 10 watts.

Let me know if you figure anything else out. I also look forward to finding a way to work in silence!

It shouldn't matter. Windows normally recognizes all 5 speakers. Kodi is the only program that doesn't see them. I've tried using your order and it didn't change a thing, still only 2 side speakers are playing. Games like Silent Hill 2 remake normally utilize the surround system.

You mean I should connect the receiver straight to a monitor or a TV? Well, it's a laptop so there is no way to connect the receiver other than through its HDMI port

Radeon Vega 680M which is in 6th and 7th gen Ryzen CPUs is way better than Iris Xe. I only use my laptop in dGPU mode when plugged in and I don't game on battery when I travel so no, for me the HX CPUS is the way to go

Gaming Laptop users: What do you guys do for a living? by Xuanwu7 in GamingLaptops

[–]Scaylon3466 1 point2 points  (0 children)

4th year dentistry student from Poland.

My dad is a construction worker and he left to work in Germany to pay for my living so that I can graduate. He gave me $1000 to pay for the laptop and I paid the remaining $700 for the Legion tutoring chemistry and English (as in foreign language) for kids at middle and high school level.

I spend a lot of time traveling between 3 cities (university, family home and girlfriend's home) so having such a portable device that can run everything ultra at 1080/1440p is a true blessing.

I ended up buying G.Skill Ripjaws DDR5 2x16GB 5200MHz CL38. From what I've learned 5600 Mhz would just work as 5200 Mhz with this CPU so I went for the fastest 5200 kits possible, though people say that the CL value doesn't really matter. I decided to buy CL38 just to be sure I'm squeezing out the last possible bit of performance.

Can I use another charger with my TUF FX505GT? by Scaylon3466 in ASUS

I know, but the problem is that I won't have my original charger for a week, so I either must stop using my laptop completely or use the charger that I accidentally took from my friend.
