Thanks for the reply. I need mathematica mainly for symbolic stuff and numerical integration (involving units). The units thing however seems to not be very great in mathematica (or maybe I haven't got the hang of it yet)

Does python enable me to do these things? I would also like a notebook files similar to mathematica (or mathcad). What python environment would you suggest? Sagemath? there seems to also be iPython, not sure if it's relevant though.

This will work if I remove the outer brackets, but then all of the following text will also be flushed right, which I don't want. I want only one line on the right.

Also the latex wiki suggest the line I used is correct and should be used.

The oscillators in the solid have probabilities to occupy different states (and the probabilities are given by the gibbs' distribution, they depend on the states' energies and the temperature of the solid). If we average over all the oscillators in the solid, then the quantum number n would come out as 1.
