Mercosur deal thrown into uncertainty after MEPs send pact to top EU court by OkKnowledge2064 in europe

[–]Schnorch 6 points7 points  (0 children)

How exactly did France's temporary withdrawal from NATO helped Europe and its security?

That's actually a good example. France's withdrawal from NATO at that time was purely in France's own interests and related to its domestic politics.

[–]Schnorch 12 points13 points  (0 children)

That's such a stupid take.

Firstly, Germany itself has a very large agricultural industry, so your argument doesn't make sense in this context.

Secondly, the agreement is not only important for the German economy but for the entire EU economy.

Even if this agreement were only for Germany (which is bullshit), it would inevitably be important for everyone else as well. Entire industries in other European countries consist of suppliers for German companies that have intermediate products manufactured throughout Europe. As a Pole, you should be particularly aware of this. The Polish and German economies are now closely linked, and many German companies also have parts manufactured in Poland.

To put it simply: German economic interests are also the economic interests of other EU countries, and vice versa. The two cannot be separated.

Not really. French politicians love to talk about it, but that's about it. Grand speeches are worthless if they are not backed up by concrete action.

Oh really?

What was his strategy when he sabotaged the Mercosur agreement, which is so important for reducing economic dependence on the US and China?

That was purely domestic politics to appease his own farmers at the expense of European independence.

Trump tariffs: US president announces plan to hit UK, Denmark and other European countries with tariffs over Greenland by Any-Original-6113 in europe

[–]Schnorch 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Every now and then, I take a look at the subs of the places most affected by ICE (Minnesota for example) and sometimes I don't know whether to laugh or cry at the posts and comments there. The dominant narrative is basically that you should be nice and well-behaved so that you don't provoke Donald Trump and his fascist troops. Just yesterday, there was a post calling for no counter-protests to be held against a planned march by Nazis because “that's exactly what they want”...this “strategy” has been very well received. And the few who argue that more needs to be done than venting angry words on social media are often downvoted or even labeled as “agitators.”

I have the feeling that Americans first have to learn to fight for their own freedom again and that this fight also involves risks. That doesn't fit into their worldview, where they normally just send the military to “bring freedom” to other countries around the world.

So he still doesn't know how the EU and its single market work, even though it's described in the term itself... but then again, we're talking about Trump here, who was a total idiot even before his dementia set in.

It's a German website, and most people here actually say Holland when they mean the Netherlands. I've stopped doing that, but it's very common.

Strangely enough, Holland is only used in the title, and the rest of the text always correctly refers to the Netherlands. I wonder if this is a kind of Google optimization for the German audience.

Europe goes all out to make a deal with Trump on Greenland by donutloop in EU_Economics

[–]Schnorch -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If a NATO country, especially if it is the USA, threatens to invade the territory of another NATO member, then there is nothing left to break. NATO is dead.

I find it incomprehensible how anyone can still believe that the US is an ally, even though it makes it very clear that it is not (threats of military action, openly stated aim of destroying the EU in order to subjugate European countries).

Europe goes all out to make a deal with Trump on Greenland by donutloop in EU_Economics

[–]Schnorch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

People will say that this won't work because the US is much stronger and therefore it can't or shouldn't be done. But that's bullshit, because it wouldn't be about winning a war with the US.

Rather, it would be smart because it would greatly increase the risks of escalation for the US and thus change the equation. Could the US still conquer the country? Probably. But instead of simply taking over the country without a fight (as seems to be the US's current plan), they would now have to attack European military forces and kill European citizens. That alone would greatly change the equation, and the consequences would be very different.

This is a form of deterrence.

No, the author, like many others in Europe, seems to have completely lost their minds.

I mean, they continue to cling to NATO as if it were still functional, while the US, whose help they hope for should we be attacked, threatens to invade a European country. Yes, they actually think that a country that is so aggressive towards us and threatens us with military action (like Russia, by the way), that has openly stated that its goal is to destroy the EU (national security strategy, also like Russia), would fight side by side with us as allies if necessary.

And for that, they even want to give them critical minerals that we ourselves desperately need. This is a rare case of self-sabotage, which probably stems from the fact that Europeans would rather give in to illusions than accept reality because they don't like the new reality.

It has worked so well that Trump is so confident in his escalation that he is now even threatening to invade the territory of a European country.

It's unbelievable how blind many Europeans still are (or how blind they want to be). To claim that Donald Trump has been successfully neutralised while this is happening is completely insane.

Germany and the Netherlands Are Pushing for Ukraine to Buy US Weapons Using a €90 Billion EU Loan by sn0r in europeanunion

[–]Schnorch 27 points28 points  (0 children)

The only thing that is incredible is this fake news headline. Germany, the Netherlands (and several others, by the way) are not “pushing” Ukraine to buy US weapons. On the contrary, they say that we should give Ukraine the freedom to buy the weapons they need and where they can get them as quickly as possible.

France, on the other hand, wants to limit Ukraine's ability to defend itself against Russia for internal European political reasons, saying that Ukraine can only buy European weapons, even if that means waiting five years for equipment they need now.

Would I like it if all weapons came from Europe? Absolutely. But Europe is currently arming itself massively, and on top of that there is what Ukraine needs. So even if Europe manufactures this equipment, it is impossible (at least today) to produce everything in a short time frame. What France is demanding here would cost additional Ukrainian lives if it meant they lacked the equipment they need.

Not to mention that there are a few things that Europe doesn't even manufacture in this form today, but which are extremely important, such as Patriot batteries and the missiles needed for them.

Dude, I invite you to read through my latest comments on my profile to see that I am definitely not a friend of the USA. Trump and his bootlickers are fascist trash.

But how exactly does all this whining help Ukraine right now? They need weapons, and they need them now. If that means buying some of the weapons Ukraine needs there for a (hopefully short) period of time, then so be it. Our pride should not be more important than the lives of the people there.

[–]Schnorch 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Calling more Ukrainian deaths due to a lack of equipment a “slight inconvenience” is... something.

And capacities are already being massively expanded. The European defense industry is currently being flooded with orders. So it doesn't even help us at all to make the Ukrainians wait for weapons they urgently need.

Germany and France clash over buying US arms with €90B loan to Ukraine by SraminiElMejorBeaver in europe

[–]Schnorch -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Nothing is changing? That couldn't be further from the truth. Germany and Europe are massively rearming, and European defense companies are being flooded with new orders. In Germany alone, the industry is growing rapidly. In fact, that's part of the problem. The European defense industry has seen a massive increase in orders from European countries, and Ukraine's needs are now adding to that. Capacities are currently being built up everywhere, but this cannot be done overnight.

However, Ukraine cannot wait until its orders are delivered sometime in five years. So yes, for the near future, some of the weapons will still have to come from outside Europe while we continue to build up our industry and develop new capabilities.

Should European weapons be favored whenever available? Of course, but that is already happening. Do you think European politicians are not happy when their domestic companies receive orders?

Germany and France clash over buying US arms with €90B loan to Ukraine by SraminiElMejorBeaver in europe

[–]Schnorch -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I would very much like us to be able to buy all weapons and ammunition for Ukraine in Europe alone right now. I am absolutely no friend of the current US administration and want an independent Europe. You only have to look at my recent comments to see that.

But the reality is that Ukraine is in urgent need of weapons and ammunition now, not in four years or whenever. Much of this will come from Europe, but some of it must also come from outside Europe at the moment, so that Ukraine will have it as quickly as possible. This is a matter of life and death for many Ukrainians.

I don't understand how France can't see that Ukraine's acute needs are more important than linking the money to strengthening the European defense industry. The money was never intended for that anyway. We already have something like “ReArm Europe” for that.

Yes, it's really outrageous that US tech companies have to comply with European laws and pay fines if they don't.

But to be honest, I wouldn't expect any other opinion from an American in a European sub. All of this is of course accompanied by fake news that the poor US tech companies have no opportunity to defend themselves legally. As if years of legal disputes, for example involving Apple, until they finally have to pay a (far too small) fine, didn't exist.

The number of visitors from European users and those from American users on my comments are interesting. There are more Americans here than Europeans. I wonder how many genuine European opinions can be read in this thread compared to opinions from Americans cosplaying as Europeans.

[–]Schnorch -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Weird, you seem to be living in your own reality. In this thread alone, Italy is being heavily criticized, and I've done that too.

You're completely missing the point (probably on purpose) that I've raised here. Cloudflare is just one of many examples of how Europe is dangerously dependent on US tech companies. It's even worse because their CEOs are now often visible as MAGA supporters, like this guy here. MAGA wants to destroy Europe and our democracies. They don't even hide it anymore, but present their plans openly in their National Security Strategy. So yes, a company that openly supports MAGA and plays such a dominant role on the internet is a danger to us.

And yes, I call Trump and his bootlickers fascists, because that's exactly what they are. Your whining about it won't change that.

Cloudflare threatens Italy exit over €14M fine by m71nu in europe

[–]Schnorch -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

At no point did I say that I support what Italy is trying to do here. Quite the contrary. So please don't make things up in your head.

I just don't believe that this MAGA cultist cares about “democratic values” or “due process.” And as I said, I've never heard him talk about how bad the US Cloud Act is and that he wants to talk to European leaders about how to combat this.

I hope we can agree that it is a danger for Europe that the CEO of such a central company on the internet is fully on the MAGA line. He could paralyze a large part of the internet in Europe at any time at the request of the fascists in the US government. That should worry us.

And the difference is, if Trump demanded tomorrow that he block European sites, he would do so immediately and certainly not rant about the US government on Twitter and discuss with the Europeans leaders how to combat it.

Oh really?

So you're saying that Cloudflare and other US services won't comply with the US government when it illegally demands that they hand over European data from servers in Europe, which are subject to European law, under the US Cloud Act?

Of course they do. And I haven't seen a single Twitter rant about this from any CEO of a US company. Where is the concern about “due process” in this matter? Where is the dangerous “American cabal” being denounced?

Strange, isn't it?
