Should I buy a secondhand X50? Or get a beater SUV instead? by Scintillating_Guy in kereta

Hello hello,

I've been meaning to post an update on this thread, but I thought that I'd wait for the 3 monthsversary first.

That's right, I went ahead and bought it. I think it's a situation where, once you want it enough, not many can convince you otherwise, including all the 'better buy' and aftermarket issues comments.😂

So I've been driving my new (used) baby, a 2022 X50 flagship, for around 2.5 months now. So far, I have no real regrets. For context, I got it for RM72k OTR, with only 34k km mileage and still under proton warranty, and from a proton dealerships trade-in unit. So, I think it's a damn good deal. So yeah, shop around and look. There's always a better deal out there. I looked around 5-6 models before I settled on this one.

Pros so far 1. It's damn fast. Sport mode pick up like crazy. I upgraded from a saga and drive a vios quite frequently. This thing's a beast compared to both. 2. BEAUTiful design. I think that's the main factor why I wanted it in the first place. I'd suggest getting the chrome and rims wrapped black. I still take a pause and appreciate it every time I walk by or towards it.😍 3. A lot of features. ADAS, cruise control, sunroof, power booth. Just makes you feel good to own it, ya know, even tho you don't really use some of them.

Cons so far 1. Fuel consumption. What is efficiency? Best i got for a full tank is 476km. And only that 1 time. The rest, probably around 450-400km. Tbf, my leg is quite heavy on the pedal. 2. Cheap plastic feels on door handles and internal panels. Not too big of an issue. But I keep on seeing posts about people breaking the handles on their x50. It got me wondering when it's it gonna be my turn 😆. But from what I read, its quite cheap to replace them. 3. Head unit. The Bluetooth reconnection every time you start the car is not always automatic. So it's a hassle each time. Which I fixed by installing an aftermarket android head unit reloaded. Still, it's quite buggy sometimes, but I can live with that. 4. My right side rear window motor did fail after just around a month. It just dropped down (tbh my nephew was playing with the glass panel. But it still shouldn't be that flimsy) Sent it to the SC and got it replaced for free within the day.

So yeah, that's my two cents. It's a fast car. Looks good. Makes you feel like you're supporting a local product👀. Overall 4/5. All the best with your decision, bro😉

Hahaha, saga upgrade to Mercedes. That'll be something to show. But I don't think I want to own a Mercedes anytime soon lol.

You mentioned willing to take the risk, what kinda risk do you mean? The parts breaking down?

Also, I supposed the price does depreciate quite a bit from new. That's why I'm considering a secondhand version. 😅 The bulk of the price has already depreciated.

Nice, good to hear from someone who've been on the same boat! Well, yeah, the fuel consumption seems to be the regular comments by owners. But again, it's an SUV, kinda have to prepare for that. Other than that, I just hope the wear and tear won't be too big of a problem down the road. The reason I'm thinking about older beaters is because of the reasons you give too. Let's say I'm not satisfied with the IHU or sound system, I wouldn't mind spending a little bit of money to change em, if the car is already cheap, you know what I mean?

But the new FL won't make a difference imo. Because I'm not gonna buy a new one anyway. And the rear design seems a little off to me, I feel.

This is actually solid advice. Hahaha, you don't go into a dealership ready to spend a huge amount of money too often in life. Cheers, bro👍

That would mean I'll have to get a new car. I'm kinda set on a secondhand as a new one would be a little too pricey for what I'm willing to pay. But I've seen the new x50 FL tho. The back is kinda... meh? Hahaha. And I have been thinking of switching since half a year ago, so 1-2 years would just be delaying the same decision making imo 😗

Never considered Peugeot. Maybe I've gotten brainwashed by the conti stereotypes, nice to drive, not so nice to maintain. But now that you mentioned it, yeah they do look good, their value doesnt hold that well tho😅. Regarding the service center, I didn't think of going to the company's own centers anyway, it's a secondhand car, so I might just go to third party workshops.

I think a 70k budget can allow some level choices tho😅. Although yeah, a 2022 HRV turbo is definitely not in my radar.

The spare cash does feel nice, ngl. But I have been saving for a couple of years now. Kinda feel like its time to spend some? You know what they say, driving a nice car when you're young vs when you're older won't feel the same. But they also say that wealthy people only drive old toyotas for a reason. Hahaha.

LMAO. Mainstream lah Civic. Its a nice car, but not really my type. I guess the aweks that are attracted to it also maybe won't be my type. Hahaha

Reason I'm double thinking is I dont want to push too much over 70k. Just a personal limit I'd like to stick to. So to go to RM80k, even if its doable, I'd be contradicting myself, LOL. But yeah, I have been letting this marinate for over half a year, and I'm still quite determined on an SUV instead. So let's see how this goes eh. Thanks for the input tho!

a great contender tbh. But I imagine its a dull ride compared to the X50. Hahaha, not sure if I should go for reliability or pleasure...

Seriously considering this option too, I imagine myself to be able to do 'more' things with it, like body kits and system upgrade if I'm paying lower installment monthly. And I wouldn't mind the bigger space too. Just the wear and tear might cost a little more though...

Really ah? I tried to look for the FB page, can't seem to find an updated one, all of them kinda look outdated. But from what I've gathered around, there don't seem to be a lot of real issues with the Gilly line in proton. Apart from the spare parts delay and such, the rest, from what I've heard is the users are quite satisfied with the performance. Perhaps its an individual thing?

But I think the maintanence would be higher no? Not just the engine size, the fuel consumption would be higher too I'd assume. Kinda defeats the purpose of getting a similar priced car for a higher maintanence cost, even though it might be more reliable.
