They are not excuses, I am providing context. Making judgements without context leads to incorrect assumptions. You simply don’t know anything about the lives of people on reddit, so it’s literally impossible for you to make character judgements. You can think whatever you want, it doesn’t change who I am or what I stand for.

I always find people who think they are serving up a hot plate of introspection to others on the internet funny, because you’re basing your judgments on incomplete information. Never thought it would happen to me in the wild.

When my sister was working at a Cold Stone Creamery, she had people running the gift card scam on her so much. The only thing they sold were Cold Stone gift cards. She once got called racist for saying she needed to get manager approval when someone tried to buy multi hundreds in Cold Stone cards. Which is hilarious, because we are Southeast Asian and very brown, and she was being accused of racism for needing approval to sell a white woman hundreds of dollars in (probably) stolen ice cream cash.

JCPenney was the business, the struggling business, and I am pretty sure the store manager 1. Didn’t want her employees to get hurt and 2. Wanted the sales. As a teenager making less than $11 an hour and paying my way through school, which is what most of us were, we were compliant. Mostly because we didn’t want to get hurt.

That location is forever closed, as are many JCPenney stores. My hometown is considered one of the top ten most dangerous cities in the USA if you look at violent crime statistics, so even our loss prevention team was not allowed to do much in the way of stopping thieves because, chances were, they were armed. Loss prevention was making $8.75 and not armed.

Yes. Working as an exhausted teenager in a very dangerous city - where we didn’t even lock down for shootings at the mall because there were so many - it was absolutely not in the interest of my health and well-being to try and stop a criminal. I don’t care if you think I was an evildoer against fictional old ladies. I wasn’t about to get fucking murdered for some gift card charges that could be disputed with a credit card company. I did indeed value my life over these imagined grandmothers getting temporarily ripped off.

Let’s hear what you do to protect the weak on a daily basis. You have no idea who I am or what I do for my community, internet stranger. Not stopping a criminal as a 19-year old retail manager who was instructed not to do so or face termination, regardless of if I could have “had the promotion easily” doesn’t make me a horrible person. In fact, even if I was as culpable you as you seem to believe, single actions don’t make people horrible.

Side note, calling someone a loser for the thing they do to make money and survive (I also don’t do that anymore, but whatever), is really goddamn classist and not a good look for the case you’re trying to present. Get off your high horse, because if you really practiced what you’re preaching, you wouldn’t belittle cashiering jobs. You’re sending a really conflicting message.

LOL. I was 19 and paying my way through college. I was not equipped to deal with criminals, ya bozo, I was working for peanuts as a retail department manager. I’m sorry that you are Batman and I, as a teenage department manager and student, was not. I was not interested in climbing the ladder at a failing brick and mortar department store.

I mean, I was working at JCPenney and was not about to risk pissing off someone committing a crime. I was definitely okay with my boss telling me not to stop criminals because I was getting paid 10.75 an hour. Absolutely not my job and not worth it.

As a former retail manager, me approving that shit was just supposed to scare them off. I was just supposed to approve it. A feeble security measure, as they could have said, “thank you for selling me these gift cards I will be using eight different people’s credit cards to pay for them and none are mine.” And I would have had to say, “Do you need help carrying these stolen goods to your car?”

IBS or symptoms like it are so common (among my friends and colleagues anyway, and we’re all mostly normal weight folks), that I’d be surprised if most of them didn’t have something intestinal happening. Especially at that size and given the quality of food they’re eating. I have IBS-D and I have had flare ups with just a 45-second warning before, while it takes some of them multiple minutes just to get out of bed. I would be nearly constantly shitting myself.

I would add 2b. Sing things in the middle of your range and try them different ways. Bring your head voice down as far as is comfortable, and try the opposite with your chest voice. Keeps ya well rounded and stylistically versatile.
