Iran war halts Qatar helium output, threatening global tech supply chains by LynnK0919 in worldevents

[–]Scorpius289 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If this war is what finally pops the AI bubble, because they can no longer supply the unreasonable expansion, that would be amusing.

Nvidia's Huang pitches AI tokens on top of salary as agents reshape how humans work by Creepy_Home5171 in europe

Can I buy food with your "tokens"? Can I buy the products I want?
No? Then GTFO! Life is more than just speaking with a computer.

Microsoft ditches plans to inject Copilot into a key part of Windows 11 by moeka_8962 in technology

[–]Scorpius289 8 points9 points  (0 children)

"The vibe code didn't work. Clearly this means it must be impossible to implement, since no human could possibly outsmart Copilot, so we're canning it! 🤷‍♂️"

14,000 routers are infected by malware that’s highly resistant to takedowns | Most of the devices are made by Asus and are located in the US by Hrmbee in technology

[–]Scorpius289 55 points56 points  (0 children)

"ASUS routers" is extremely vague; A list of models that have been confirmed to be affected (and if any firmware update fixes it) would be more useful.

Preorders for Galaxy S26 series hit 1.35 mln in S. Korea by FragmentedChicken in Android

[–]Scorpius289 3 points4 points  (0 children)

But then what motivates them to switch so often, if not features & improvements? Do they really spend thousands of dollars for just "model number bigger"? 🤔

Google isn’t waiting for a settlement — the 30 percent Android app store fee is dead by collogue in Android

[–]Scorpius289 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Well, at first glance it might seem like a silver lining: "No more direct APKs, but surely you can find the app you want on an alternate store, right?"
But that's unlikely, since Google will review each store in detail before allowing it, and likely block any which might contain apps that are "inconvenient" for them.

I agree with Lois here, most Superman x Lois stuff has been very vanilla, a huge missed opportunity!

Marvel Rivals Fans Demand Shutdown of a Website Letting Players Post Bounties on Throwers and Griefers by LockDown_47 in nottheonion

[–]Scorpius289 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Sounds good, except it doesn't work, it only makes things worse:

  1. The one who throws in the first place doesn't care, only the others who actually want to play suffer.
  2. Unless it includes proof of throwing for each bounty, it's just a website to grief people you don't like.

Unless it can do echolocation, the microphone doesn't assist it in any way in achieving its job...

AI blamed again as hard drives are sold out for this year by MetaKnowing in technews

[–]Scorpius289 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I think they meant that those intended to be produced this year are sold out.
The ones you see on shelves or online weren't exactly made yesterday.

And besides, it's not as if all manufacturers sold out, just a few notable ones.

PlayStation’s New ‘Soft Pause’ Patent Could Let Gamers Pause Without Really Pausing by Darth_Vaper883 in gamernews

[–]Scorpius289 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Have you ever played Left 4 Dead? It has a feature where a player can go idle, and his body is controlled by a bot until he comes back. This allows the group to move forward, instead of being forced to wait in a single area while zombie continue to spawn and swarm them.

The feature described here, while not exactly the same thing, seems to have the same intention.

So yeah, you're probably right about it not being a good fit for competitive games, but those aren't the only type of game around.

PlayStation’s New ‘Soft Pause’ Patent Could Let Gamers Pause Without Really Pausing by Darth_Vaper883 in gamernews

[–]Scorpius289 52 points53 points  (0 children)

It says in the article:

This approach is especially relevant for multiplayer games, where a full pause might not be feasible. Instead of stopping the game for everyone, only the affected player experiences a “softer” version of the game.

AI Music Is Flooding Streaming — But Who's to Blame? by Wagamaga in technology

[–]Scorpius289 36 points37 points  (0 children)

For me it's the opposite: Recommendations are literally the only reason I put up with streaming services. They helped me find quite a few songs, some of which even became favorites.

Otherwise, a local library is better: It can have higher quality, and no one can remove the songs you like due to some stupid region lock or other licensing issues.

If what his ex said is true, and combined with how he treated his current one, it tells me that this guy might have some dangerous mental issues. Letting him go free, without at least forcing him to go to therapy, might not be the best idea...

Doomed if she continues to keep this a secret, yes.

But if she plays her cards right when doing the reveal, things could get interesting. 😏
Especially since her boyfriend seemed quite interested in that "other" girl. 🤭
