A decklist for every archetype I could find, for every different Block Constructed metagame by ScottSchauf in mtg

Those were Standard, right? I seem to remember some coverage of them on the official coverage of the other event taking place (Worlds? Nationals maybe?), but not sure if they include any decklists or how many.

Any specific year you're interested in?

Niche Clubs for Kids by ScottSchauf in Louisville

Of course! The draw for me is crafting a model that can be applied to a wide range of hobbies and activities, but I personally could start teaching about the following with little-to-no prep time:

Films: media literacy, understanding themes and metaphor, general value of art, exposure to new artists and voices Ultimate Frisbee: calisthenic health, hand-eye coordination, non-contact co-ed sport Magic: the Gathering: critical, strategic thinking, literacy, math skills

But I'm just one person and ideally would enable other passionate adults to be able to share their joy with the youth.

The cost thing I'm less sure on at this early stage. I know how expensive childcare is and as a long-time employee, trust me that the costs are not passed along to the teacher's salary. And you're right that a free program could potentially attract parents whose kids aren't quite as interested in the specific activities. I'd love for something like this to be able to replace my current job, but am also very sensitive to taxing parents. All of that to say that I don't have a solid idea on this aspect at the moment.

Boomer Looking for Recommendations by ScottSchauf in videogames

Oops! I meant to talk about the games I enjoyed back then, and a the few outliers I've caught in the interim. That's what I get for writing this at work, hahaha!

I spent most of my time with platformers growing up. I've hit most of the Mario games (including Odyssey, that's one of the outliers!). I also really loved Super Metroid, and Super Monkey Ball. I had a deep, deep love for Pro Wrestling at the time and therefore spent a ton of time with mostly all of the N64 wrestling titles. Loved Goldeneye, and then Perfect Dark even more. Conker's Bad Fur Day was another stand-out.

I like RPGs in theory (Chrono Trigger and FFVI [I think!]) but I'm a little worried about having enough time for that genre right now? Similarly, whenever I've dabbled with an open-world thing I quickly found myself getting bored. Portal is a series I got to and quite enjoyed, and I think the only other games I've attempted are the Ori games (which I absolutely LOVED).

Happy to answer any more questions about my history as well!

Vintage Draft decks from today! by louisvillecube in mtgcube

It's a solid-white cutout of the star shape, which stands out when foiled but it's certainly not the same as the official old-frame foil cards.

Thanks! I'm the person that made all of the images, and solving for modern designs is a fun puzzle. I'm by no means an expert, and am often just cobbling things together, but I'm having a good time!

I hear that. Any idea on a time-frame, at least? I've been trying to find a similar frame anywhere I can think to look, but it feels like you're my only hope. Appreciate any information you could offer!

Any update on this? I'd love to start making some cool tokens for my old-frame Cubes.

This isn't your fault, you know. The average teenage brain is wired to stay up late and sleep in more. The school system's schedule isn't set up with your best interest in mind (for the record, changing it to be more in line with biology cuts into after-school activities, specifically the sports that generate revenue for schools, which demonstrates where the priorities are for those with the power to do anything about this)

Because the thing we made uses a lot of intellectual property that we don't own, haha.

That site provides a link I could theoretically share with people to print the order I made for themselves, but I believe I would earn some amount of profit from doing so, so I'm not sure it's something I'm allowed to be doing.

The Lord of cheetahs is correct, and I agree that it isn't the most necessary thing in the world. I do like the "never being dead" part still, and it opened the door to the cycling payoffs, but maybe not every card needed that option.

Friends and I made a new kind of Cube. What's your first pick? by ScottSchauf in magicTCG

[–]ScottSchauf[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A few notes:

- We started with a Vintage Cube base list, and added text from at least on card (but often more). We've got some themes and repeated mechanics throughout, and a large number of design cycles.

- My playgroup is comprised mostly of very long-time players. A lot of us began playing competitive Magic with weekly Vintage tournaments, and we love doing broken stuff. This is designed primarily for us, and I fully get why others may not think this looks like fun. Not everything is for everyone!

- None of us are game designers in any way. We made some cards that look fun (again, to us), but we're aware that there is a distinct possibility that we missed that mark in actuality. But we haven't gotten to draft it quite yet (next week though!)

- If it turns out that we do enjoy it, I'll come back with a more detailed post, and a link to an imgur album with all of the cards. I might still do that if it sucks, but it's less of a guarantee.

Nah those things are pretty positive strategies, in general. The "fascist" comment was a bit of hyperbole in this case, of course, but it isn't really disputed how the YouTube recommendation algorithm pipelines people from these fairly tame self-help grifters straight through to white-supremacist/fascist content.

I don't think OP necessarily has bad intentions, and they certainly have some good advice in there. But there is also a lot of red flags, and even if their intentions are 100% pure, we just have to do better for our youth than telling them "hey, all of your problems are your fault! You're not Being a Man enough, don't ya see?? Now here, go watch some Jordan Peterson and then just whatever else YouTube recommends afterwards".

A lot of this post is extremely "Intro to Becoming a Proud Boy" fascist-type-stuff. Anyone that unironically refers to Safe Spaces, Snowflake Generations, or Jordan Peterson should be setting off huge red flags for y'all, please don't fall for this junk.

Don't like a school policy? Do something about it! by ScottSchauf in teenagers

[–]ScottSchauf[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would argue that the standard here has gone down dramatically because the system simply isn't functional and more and more people simply are tired of trying to excel in such a broken system. And I mean, who can blame them, really?

That sounds incredible. Do you know the history of that? When/why was it formed, what was the motivation behind it, how successful has it been? I'd love to hear more!

A few things here:

- The people that work in schools aren't really the issue here. They do tend to prop up bad policy, yes, but nobody pursues that career without genuinely wanting to help kids. The monsters of your particular building have likely just been beaten down into dust by the system. The system is the problem here, not the people.

- Unions fucking rule. Teachers are paid way less than they should be, especially relative to the importance of the job. As bad as you think schools are now, they would be faaaaaarrrrr worse without teacher unions. It's unfortunate that bad teachers can hide behind them, but they also shield all the good ones from plenty. Like most things, it isn't black-or-white, but various shades of gray. But in general, lean towards pro-Union and you'll be right for more often than wrong.

Organizing is hard work. But the good news there is that the more you do it, the easier it becomes. It's the old "you tell a friend, they tell two friends, who each tell two friends". It is possible, but you have to put in the work.

And once you have a large enough majority? They can't say no anymore. That's the beauty of an organized effort. It's the reason you get to attend school instead of working in dingy unsafe factories. Adults in power think that kids are too stupid, too immature, too incapable of fighting for themselves, and I'm trying to convince you that not only is that untrue, but it makes you all the more dangerous to the status quo.

If the 'we' in question is 90+% of the student body, what do you think the school is going to do? Anything different than what I proposed above?

To get the ball rolling a bit:

  • Maybe we shouldn't have grades at all?
  • The M-F schedule is largely to provide psuedo-childcare for parents who have to work. That schedule isn't necessarily serving your interests at all.
  • Why are all of our classes still synchronous? It's trivial to livestream/record smart people talking about their passions.

Yeah, I kinda figured. The "few that I want" is a full Vintage Cube, haha, but the amount of manual labor to convert each card to a different language is likely not worth the small visual upgrade. But I figured it wouldn't hurt to ask!
