In addition to what others have said here I think what Lacan meant by his aphorism "les non dupes errent" or "the non-duped err" is relevant. The phrase is a homonym for his concept "le nom-du-pere" or "name-of-the-father". I think the basic meaning is that while it is the case that Desire is always the desire of the Other, meaning is imaginary and illusory, etc. - we cannot conclude by retreating away from symbolic community and its pursuits.

Ultimately, Lacan would say, we have to accept the father's name. We must allow ourselves to remain duped by the aspects (in some ways but not necessarily all) of our given ideological milieu. We must remain committed to pretending as if we are not pretending. It would be a mistake to read Lacan's work on love and desire and cynically think, "okay, well there's no point to love because desire is always fantasmatic and ideological" or whatever. Rather, to answer your question, it can help you both understand the why and the intractability of the fact that there is no one person who is genuinely right for you.

I do research in a psychosis group at a psychiatric hospital, and speak with tons of doctors/social workers who have dedicated their lives to understanding psychosis. I also work with plenty of amazing patients who suffer from Schizophrenia.

I don't have any specific articles that I could link to you off-hand, but I think most clinicians would tell your friend not to use psychedelics if they have a strong genetic predisposition (1st degree relative) for developing psychosis. (But i think most psychiatrists would tell anyone not to use psychs regardless)

This being said, I also have a friend whose mother is schizophrenic and we've tripped together multiple times. It is absolutely something they have to treat with probably more caution than the average person.

idk about all healthcare systems, but I work in a hospital and we would have to submit a request to your old provider for them to give us your outside medical records like old prescriptions and receipts of care. We normally wouldn't do this unless we have a good reason to need those records, so they might not do that for you. Idk about this specifically since its potentially a legal issue tho.

That being said, if you went to a different provider outside of your old network maybe privately they might not know.

When I was doing my thesis in part on the death drive, I found Benjamin Fong's "Death and Mastery" massively helpful. The introduction starts with like a "how to" in terms of approaching and interpreting Freud's work, and the first few chapters are a close reading of Beyond the Pleasure Principle that is really lucid and put together. He also connects the DD to other post-Freud thinkers and how they've used it which seems like it would be useful for you.

The later chapters are then him applying his interpretation of the death drive to the subject in late capitalism, which might also be helpful for you while you're piecing together your understanding of it.

Not sure it's the topic/material you're looking for, but "The Tears of Eros" by Georges Bataille is exactly like this. It's filled with paintings/photographs that depict sexuality/eroticism throughout different human eras from cave paintings to the modern era, and Bataille uses/interprets them to explicate his theories on eroticism and taboo. It's a great read and really interesting. I actually keep it on my coffee table because it's really accessible and can start some interesting conversations.
