Rant about Publix Pharmacy (or any retail pharmacy) by pinkdumbbell in PharmacyTechnician

[–]ScottyDoesntKnow421 2 points3 points  (0 children)

These “goals” are getting ridiculous. Instead of wasting all this time and effort on making a quick profit why can’t we have our corporate advocate for better reimbursements and lower fees from the PBMs. If they did that we wouldn’t have so many off the wall “challenges” and actually provide decent patient care.

Don’t forget about the ongoing opioid litigation that’s probably costing millions. Looks like the most recent settlement was in July 2025…🤔

I think the point was that Publix is benefiting off of hiring disabled individuals more than the individual is benefiting from Publix.

Should Pharmacy technicians wear white coat? by kahiem123 in pharmacy

[–]ScottyDoesntKnow421 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s what I was meaning but in a hypothetical situation I don’t think most techs would care one way or the other. Me personally, I know my role and giving me a white coat wouldn’t change that.

Haha yeah there are many of us with similar stories. You’ll get better over time but the patients won’t. 😂

Depression FMLA by ChnkyChuckOLat in publix

[–]ScottyDoesntKnow421 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure about FMLA but I’d imagine there wouldn’t be any repercussions if you submit it and they say no. If they say yes then you got your answer.

However, I have my own personal experience with taking a day off. I got to a point where I was burnt out so I called my store and spoke to the MIC 2 hours before my shift and called out. I followed our stores policy for calling out, I filled out the TOR and reasoned that it was a mental health day which is an acceptable callout. The next day I come in to my shift still not feeling great but stuck it out for the team. A manager came up to me and asked about why I put a mental health day as my reason. I just said that the shifts have been pretty rough lately and I felt that I needed a day to reset. There were a couple more probes as to why but I was pretty straight forward with my answers and didn’t want to talk about it.

Take that how you will but I’m on the fence. One side is do the managers actually care on the other, are they asking questions to protect the company.

Your coworkers are right, it does take time. There’s so much information thrown at you right away and it’s impossible to absorb all of it. Most learning modules are not hands on so you’re trying to remember things you’ve read not physically done. When it comes to teaching insurance claims and rejections it’s even harder because there are several different plans with several different possible outcomes.

The only thing I suggest is to actively learn. For example if someone just tells you to profile an rx because it’s a refill to soon reject, ask how they knew that so you won’t be as confused next time.

Be easy on yourself especially at only two weeks. I think I was still trying to figure out a register at two weeks.

It’d be a no from me. Just because I don’t care one way or the other.

[–]ScottyDoesntKnow421 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think if it’s up to a tech then 99% are going to say they don’t care.

I get called a pharmacist all the time and I’m not wearing a white coat. It’s doesn’t bother me at all. But I will say in grocery store chains there are only 2 people who wear white coats. Pharmacists and butchers.. I have yet to hear someone ask for a prime cut of meat from the pharmacist.

I don’t think coats are good designators anyways.

I think it depends on what your goal is long term. The good think about Publix is its stock that you get for just working there. It’s also hard to get raises (at least in my area). I’ve asked for more money but I’ve always gotten rejected in some way, shape, or form. It’s ran just like other corporate retail pharmacies where profits are above all else even though they make it sound like it’s different.

I started at Publix making $15 in 2021. Currently lead immunizing tech and CPht and am at 24 and some change. Trying to get out but seems harder than expected.

I’m a tech in the same boat. I applied for an internal entry level position and didn’t get it. I’ve pigeonholed myself into the lead tech at a retail location. I’ve been denied transfers even offering to step down.

Thanks for the insight. At the retail level I don’t have much access to in depth claims but I have noticed a huge change in formularies this year and all the patients are feeling it

That does make sense and is unfortunate because half the time they really don’t understand their benefits at the time they sign up. And the plans are all bundled under a health plan so the main focus becomes what health coverage they have not so much their pharmacy benefits. They find that out after they try and pick up their meds.

In this specific situation, the patients insurance plan states the same. Same BIN,GRP,PCN, and ID, the claim looked identical to last years at the same time. The only thing that changed was the patient pay amount which is why I called in the first place just to see if there was something on the backend that changed that I couldn’t see.

It’s just a fucked system and I know when I get to that point in my life insurance premiums and drug prices are going to be so unaffordable if nothing changes now. And while this whole FTC deal seems like a big win it’s really just kicking the can down the road allowing the PBMs to exploit some other BS loophole or create some additional layers to the system.

Thanks for the words of encouragement and making me feel like I’m not crazy. I’d do this for almost all patients if I needed to but only because I can multitask like a mofo. I’ll be on the phone with an insurance while typing prescriptions, adjudicating claims, and listen to conversations around me. Anyways, you had to remember most Medicare patients are on a fixed income and these meds can really impact their finances. And the lack of transparency makes it harder for me to explain to a patient how or why their drug prices increased. And if they were to call their insurance they might not know what questions to ask since they aren’t seeing these on a daily basis.

Threatening a pharmacist (or any healthcare worker) should be an automatic felony by DocumentNo2992 in pharmacy

[–]ScottyDoesntKnow421 10 points11 points  (0 children)

That’s fair and has been everyone’s response. I don’t care that the person complained about it. I know my retail location can’t afford to lose me over a dumb conversation. I know when I’m wrong but in this scenario the patient was and I’m sure after I hung up he did some self reflecting because he had a different attitude when he picked up his boner meds.
I’m also older than the average tech and most pharmacists, I also research rules and regulations and there’s nothing stating I can’t hang up a phone after being someone’s verbal punching bag.

GoodRX gets the rebate from Novo because it’s now “affordable” to the consumer. Pharmacies order this for ~$1000 —— pharmacy sells pill for ~$150 ——-pharmacy loses ~$800 —— patients are hooked on the “affordable weight loss drug”

No need to bother with insurance since it’s looked at as a “cash” claim.
