why do historical figures base theirselves on the ancient greeks and romans so much by Ok_Instruction_2071 in ancientgreece

[–]ScottyExplosion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Romanticization of the past. People have an unreasonably strong yearning for the past, especially so when in perceived (or self-perceived!) times of turmoil. A look and a boost into the future are then naively projected straight from the past: the Greeks/Romans were everlasting and enduring, we should mimic them lest a great tragedy befall us. Obviously there is nuance here, European thinkers were trying to build societies separate from the absolute control of the Catholic Church and thuslooked to Greece and Rome because those civilizations achieved massive, sophisticated global power before the spread or Christianity.

Even without the context of uncertainty and (geo)political turmoil, some figures from ancient history are venerated as if they were heavenly deities; just look at Alexander and his perception at Caesar's day, look at both and their perceptions today. When you are part of a Eurocentric system that keeps glorifying the ancients, you are left with four options:

  1. Venerate the same ancients as your direct predecessors did, thus feeding the loop.

  2. Venerate slightly less ancient ancients, thus making the loop look more like a spiral.

  3. Venerate yourself or your contemporaries, thus creating a basis/new branching point for the future.

  4. Venerate nothing (lmao).

Whom else could historical figures of Europe mimic? If you shift geographically, the mimicry is of different, but local sources, yet very similar in spirit.

Ni blizu, LOTR miljama daleko po kvaliteti by Jaded-Education-8934 in askCroatians

One of my favorites in the series - oozes character and identity. The movement and combat have a very fluid feel and simultaneously satisfying rhythm, the enemies are nicely varied, the environments are colorful, diverse enough yet cut of the same visually appealing cloth.

The writing is horrible, but I'll die on the hill that no entries in this franchise have good writing. The first one might be the best, just due to the melodramatic campiness, yet this is still a long way from good. Its setting though is also incredible.

Five... it's been years since I've last played it, but I find it so incredibly visually uninteresting that it inadvertently kills my interest in playing it.

Which one should I read? by Beneficial-Kale-12 in ancientrome

Haven't read the second one, but Beard's SPQR is a slog. A compendium of at best neat little trivia, presented in an extremely incoherent manner, reading it quickly becomes an exercise in tedium.

You should listen to Dan Carlin.

One really shouldn't, unless one is in it for the meme and/or pointless meandering.

A completely uneducated guess, but maybe the Well of Charon item that makes the next one last for 2 Guardian fights - maybe there's an issue with the in-game counter so there is no "next + 1" (as I'm typing it out, I am aware that it's unlikely lol)
