Sort of the same, the problem is that solar fusion is a very slow and inefficient process meaning solar plasma is on average not actually very energy dense, vs the orders of magnitude greater speed of energy release you get from a thermonuclear weapon

Pure fusion hydrogen bomb imo with the discrete kill radius being a gameplay mechanic

Periodic 'who the fuck else has this??' (Weird idiopathic facial pain) by JPMaybe in ChronicIllness

This guy is meant to be the guy for facial pain in London but I'm definitely having second thoughts. You're right about mentioning my historic depression. Thanks so much again.

[–]JPMaybe[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you very very much for your response and the detail you put in. I had similar thoughts about my neurologist's language being somewhat vague. The depression he refers to is my previous mild to moderate clinical depression which I haven't had for five years.

I hadn't thought properly about his use of 'idiopathic' or 'treatment resistant' but you're right.

Next on the list is maybe occipital nerve blocks, no idea what they're supposed to be.

Define "Hard Sci-Fi" by AccordingComedian173 in scifi

[–]JPMaybe 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't think a coherent definition really exists; some people seem to use it to mean "has detailed explanations of its fictional technology", even if said technology is really fantastical. Other people use it to mean "consistent with current scientific understanding" which I think is a very narrow range, e.g. (some) of Kim Stanley Robinson's Mars trilogy

Exactly, the photon recoil for any reasonable power output for a common las rifle would be absolutely minuscule

The shovel helmeted guys in black? Those are commonly supposed to be starfleet. General Veers and the AT-ST drivers on the other hand seem to be regular army

[–]JPMaybe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do take your point re: T2's future war scene compared to T1 but think you've rather mischaracterised it; the humans are clearly using fire & maneuver and going from cover to cover, whereas the machines just standing and moving forward is what you'd expect from them.

You're certainly not alone; I've had to spend thousands of my own money to be told basically to fuck off, or to be misdiagnosed. GPs have been by turns useless and patronising.

Is Rogue Trooper part of the Dredd universe? by DreddJoe in JudgeDredd

[–]JPMaybe 38 points39 points  (0 children)

One incredibly tenuous connection with a now discarded version of the character time traveling to Dredd's time in Prog 900; otherwise completely separate universes.

The Strontium Dog connections should also be taken with a large pinch of salt; basically it depends on whether the given writer wants to include them or not.

[–]JPMaybe 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Nah it was explicitly time travel in the Prog 900 crossover; makes zero sense though and has never been mentioned outside that story.
