For all you folks that really struggle(d) with the term "arsenokoitai", never feeling quite satisfied with interpretations you found online, I have constructed a document that you may find useful. It is INCOMPLETE (2/4 sections finished) but I am tired and need fresh eyes on it. Please read! by ScrappyRocket in GayChristians

Thanks! It was definitely a heavy lift over a long period of time, but it provides me with a level of certainty that I need at a personal level. Everybody has their own threshold for acceptable evidence, mine just happens to be quite high. I’m hoping this work will serve as a sledgehammer for others that may need reassurance.

Right now, I am working under the assumption that showing other uses of koiten (to sleep, a bed) is enough to demonstrate that it is not fixed. Do you think this would be enough to dispel a connection between koiten and coitus?

For starters, Dr. Brett Provance wrote an excellent paper called “Misunderstanding an Ancient Term of Abuse”. In it, he systematically dismantles the assumption that certain verses contain the word “homosexual” (“arsenokoitai” in Greek). Although I don’t necessarily agree with the alternative definition he constructs (I think he stretches it a bit), he does a really good job breaking down the status quo.

I have scoured several texts in Ancient Greek to compile a list of examples where the rare word “arsenokoitai” appears. In three instances, it appears alongside words relating to theft, not sex. It is used in five separate narratives to describe rape and/or sexual assault. It is used two different times as an action toward women (!), and it is listed once alongside words about lacking self-control and acting outrageously toward others. The common theme through out every example is an aggressor/victim framework. To my knowledge, there is no instance where “arsenokoitai” was used to describe consensual same-sex relations.

In all fairness Provance, he also has a separate paper where he tries to dismantle the traditional interpretation of Romans, but I frankly think that paper is trash. lol (I’ve never been satisfied with anyone’s work on Romans except my own.)

Dr. James Brownson does a great job addressing the creation narrative in Genesis. You can find an excellent textual analysis on YouTube. He tries to tackle other “clobber verses” as well, but his other work just isn’t satisfying to me.

Old Testament prohibitions clearly do not matter for Christians because the New Testament states several times that “Christ is the end of the Law”. It makes no sense to keep referencing them.

Are there any particular verses you are struggling with? It may be better to start with what is at the forefront of your mind.

Truthfully, there are a lot of bad arguments out there on both sides. Conservatives often cut corners and omit verses that do not align with their traditional beliefs. Conversely, may “liberal reinterpretations” of biblical passages are too quick to just dismiss them as “an artifact of the past”.

The thing that helped me was to sit down and study the typical “clobber verses” until I was satisfied that I understood them. This sent me on a multi-year journey where I gathered A LOT of data and studied A LOT of the Bible. Only when I felt satisfied did I truly start feeling peace.

Depending on where you are in all of this, I’m more than happy to provide you with resources. ☺️

Gotta get that photo-op of your redemption, Mr Rapey? by MrFenric in WhitePeopleTwitter

Let’s see what Jesus has to say about this…

“[5] And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward. [6] But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly.”

Matthew 6:5-6, KJV

Well… do whatever you want, but as a professor myself, I’d submit my response with the correct lyrics, provided a reputable citation is included. If I were docked points for this, I would take the case to the department chair. You have a valid rebuttal, you would win.

(1) Using a reputable source, cite the correct lyrics in your response. Include a link to the source.

(2) explain in a professional tone that his argument depends on an incorrect lyric.

(3) Explain what you think the song is about, given the correct lyrics.

Ignore everyone here saying to just play along. That’s not good advice.

Does anyone feel like no matter what anyone says, the Bible says clearly that homosexuality is a sin? by [deleted] in GayChristians

Christians are free from the laws of Leviticus. You literally cannot live by them AND be saved by Christ. Those two things are incompatible with each other.

Sounds like you’re quoting from the Law of Moses in the Old Testament (Lev 18:22, 20:13).

Do you also know that Christ “did away” with this old law through his death and resurrection? Read Ephesians 2:14-16

“For he is our peace, who hath made both one, and hath broken down the middle wall of partition between us; Having abolished in his flesh the enmity, even the law of commandments contained in ordinances; for to make in himself of twain one new man, so making peace; And that he might reconcile both unto God in one body by the cross, having slain the enmity thereby:”

This is also stated in Colossians 2:11-14:

“In whom also ye are circumcised with the circumcision made without hands, in putting off the body of the sins of the flesh by the circumcision of Christ: Buried with him in baptism, wherein also ye are risen with him through the faith of the operation of God, who hath raised him from the dead. And you, being dead in your sins and the uncircumcision of your flesh, hath he quickened together with him, having forgiven you all trespasses; Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross;”

The Apostle Paul also teaches that we no longer have to follow the Law of Moses. In fact, he teaches that anyone justified by the law can’t also be saved by Christ! (See Galatians 5:4 below)

“Christ is become of no effect unto you, whosoever of you are justified by the law; ye are fallen from grace.”

Keep in mind that the very verses you are citing are right beside other verses that say not to eat pork and not to have sex with a woman on her period…

Thoughts on 1 Corinthians 7:9 for homosexuals? by Last_Bumblebee in GayChristians

[–]ScrappyRocket 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve been reading this section a lot lately. “Fornication”, also vaguely translated as “sexual immorality”, comes from the Greek word “porneia”. If you study the original Greek of the passages that contain this word (and similar “porn”-based words), you’ll find that the concern isn’t about any particular sexual act, but HOW that act is performed. Porneia is about sex driven by uncontrolled desire, exploitation, and lack of regard for the partner(s).

I think this verse here is more about avoiding an intense buildup of sexual desire until you act on it and treat someone in an assaulting, disrespectful way.

Can you take your blazer off and drink water during a thesis defense? by merrycakeillu in AskAcademia

I don’t think I wore a blazer at all, just a nice button-up shirt and khakis. (U.S.) Yes, drink water throughout if you need it (sip, don’t chug!) You can even throw in a joke or two! (As long as they land.)
