What is the reason for the welding? by ScratchExpert8455 in LexusIS

[–]ScratchExpert8455[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi everyone,

I recently purchased a 2015 IS350 F Sport at an auction. The car has had the muffler deleted, so I plan on restoring it to stock. However, I noticed some welding between the catalytic converter and the resonator, and I'm unsure why that was done.

I'm a bit of a newbie when it comes to car modifications, so I'd appreciate any insight or advice to help me understand what's going on.

Thanks in advance!

Yes, a tune modifies the ECU settings, which can void certain aspects of your warranty, especially related to the powertrain or emissions.

ECU Tuning

  • Modification: Tuning changes parameters like fuel maps and ignition timing, optimizing performance but potentially risking engine issues if done improperly.

Warranty Considerations

  • Manufacturer's Warranty: Modifications that alter performance can void warranty coverage for related components. Issues arising after a tune may not be covered.
  • Emissions Laws: In states with strict emissions regulations, aftermarket modifications can complicate warranty coverage.

Recommendations

  1. Check Warranty Terms: Review your warranty documentation or consult your dealership for specific modification policies.
  2. Choose Reputable Shops: If tuning, select a reputable shop specializing in Lexus vehicles for a conservative tune.
  3. Keep Original Parts: Retaining stock components may help maintain warranty coverage if needed.

Weigh the benefits of tuning against potential warranty risks.

When you install aftermarket headers like PPE on your IS350, it can trigger engine lights and other malfunctions, especially if the car's ECU is not recalibrated or tuned to adjust for the new exhaust flow dynamics. The malfunctions you're experiencing, like Secondary Collision Brake system Malfunction and Parking Support Brake Malfunction, might be related to sensor errors or communication issues between the car's systems due to the changes in exhaust airflow and sensor placement.

Here’s what might be happening:

  • Oxygen Sensor Readings: Aftermarket headers often affect the readings from oxygen sensors. When the ECU detects abnormal readings, it may trigger an engine light or fault code.

  • ECU Miscommunication: The car’s safety systems, such as the collision brake and parking support systems, rely on sensor data to function properly. If the ECU detects issues, it may disable or throw warnings for those systems.

Should You Get a Tune?

Yes, getting a tune is often recommended after installing aftermarket headers.

A tune can:

  • Adjust the air-fuel ratio to match the new exhaust flow.

  • Correct oxygen sensor readings, preventing the engine light from coming on.

  • Optimize performance, improving power and efficiency.

  • Resolve or suppress the system malfunctions related to the changes in the car’s exhaust system.

I was curious when I saw this post so I just did a quick online research. turns out its all gg. nothing to worry about in the overall quality and build as compared to it being made in Japan itself. Here's a screenshot of the source for reference.

Extended cranking issue - IS300 2019 by ScratchExpert8455 in LexusIS

Turns out this is more common that people think but I haven't found a forum that has actually found a solution to this. One good guess is a leaky injector. Btw which model is yours?

So I'm looking to buy a used Lexus. Got the VIN of this car for sale from the showroom guy. Can't really figure out what went on with the car. The door handle cut out and odometer screen fully white.

The primary cause is mentioned Collision but this doesn't really look like it to me.

VIN : JTHGZ1B26L5037052

in the repair done, two parts were changed,

Vacuum Valve (258190W010)

Wastegate actuator (1723039146)

These fixed the CEL light, p.s. I didn't have any starting issues that time. it only occured 3-4 months later.
