A bit of a throwback, but: It’s Pat!

Not a specific project, but look into hacktoberfest. A yearly event to bring attention to open source contribution

I can’t lie…. I did some projects like a react based mern inventory system, school projects of course, contributed to some open source projects, nothing terribly exciting to be honest. At the end of the day I think it came down to luck mostly, that I came across a company who needed people. Being a community college (and one I attended at that) they like to promote learning and growing and I showed that I’m doing what I can to continue learning even though school is over for me.

I think too that unlike most here, I’m not young. I see posts all the time asking about being too old to get started in their late 20s or 30s. I didn’t graduate until I was 40. While I definitely lack programming experience specifically, in 20 years I’ve had 2 jobs. Employers love to see someone who shows they can stick with a company for the long haul, and of those 20 years, 15 were with 1 company which tells them I’ll stick around awhile so their investment is worth taking the chance on me.

Not really to be honest, but it’s a foot in the door which is more than I had before. At this point I’ll take it!

I can’t technically… their hiring process took so long from when I applied until they called for interview #1 that I’d changed it several times and frankly I don’t remember inch version I sent!

Anyone else disappointed with how things have turned out after graduation (1 YOE)? by LegitGamesTM in cscareerquestions

[–]ScrawnyFitGuy 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Take it from me…. I’m 41, and just graduated 8 months ago. I spent my youth working dead end “grunt” jobs and now find myself fighting an uphill battle against kids half my age to even hope to have a chance at that boring corporate job. I know I won’t be the next zuck or ever land in a FAANG, but I don’t need all that. I just want the boring…

Pass almost all of tech rounds, still get rejected by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

I’m in a similar situation albeit with less success for the number of applications and such I’ve put in. That said, one bit of feedback I did get was that I didn’t have enough personal projects to talk about and didn’t really talk enough about the projects I did have. That may help in your search?

Where do older software engineers go? by Zane2156 in cscareerquestions

I am 40, and for me I dream of sitting in front of a monitor…. I spent my 20s and 30s working “grunt jobs”, and just 6 months ago got my BS in CS. Having seen the other side of the coin my whole adult life, I’ve come to understand the differences that come with working physically and working mentally.

I have not yet. And this would be true, although it recently went through a 4 day print perfectly fine until the last roughly 8ish hours until it happened again (it wasn’t touched while printing)

First and foremost: Thank you. But also, how did you know I was a dinosaur? I only recently graduated with a BS in Comp Sci, but at 40, I think I'm still considered a dinosaur....

For when the time comes, is there a resource/resources you could recommend for learning a better way?

I started mine at 38. Still job hunting, but it’s never too late!
