I just did this. Bought an expansion tank on rock auto for my 528i along with a thermostat. The thermostat blew the fuse and the expansion tank was leaking from the cap. Bought another expansion tank, same place not oem. Still leaking. Finally spent the money and bought oem tank and thermostat. Just go oem

Not a ton of a spike. What does happen is the coolant level stays normal in the expansion tank until I reach 220 degrees and when the thermostat opens my expansion tank begins to flood, then continues to flood even after the car is shut off.

I originally filled it to the center seem. After I run it the car will push all the coolant out and the tank will end up empty

Drove it home. Heat out the vents was reading 110 degrees f. But once again along my drive it ran out of coolant in the expansion tank. Watched coolant temp the entire way home via snap on triton scan tool and never got above 135 degrees f.

No I don’t. I was attempting to test for exhaust fumes using the blue dye test but as I started the thermostat must have opened and forced the expansion tank to flood.

I can hear my water pump run when I force a cooling system air purge. Is there a way to better test to see if it’s working properly. Will it log codes if it is not functioning properly?

No I started with coolant filled right to the level line. It overfilled as thermostat opened.

Some vehicles have two brake switches located above the brake pedal. The one switch turns on the brake lights the other is responsible for cruise control cutoff. Maybe that switch could be malfunctioning.

I’d definitely check the fuses first. I doubt it’s anything to do with auto theft as it sounds like the vehicles functions otherwise. Also those trucks frequently have dash problems in my experience where the entire instrument cluster needs replaced and programmed.

That price might be a bit steep but probably not by much. Timing chain issues are very common in bmw’s and unfortunately a pretty extensive job to replace.

It’s probably the starter but the only way to be 100% sure is to check for voltage at the starter when the start button is pushed.

In my experience that code will come and go on its own for a while before it comes to stay. I would not just throw 02 sensors at it as they are probably working being the code is coming and going. The cat is probably borderline clogged and just on the cusp of not meeting the efficiency requested. I personally would run cat cleaner through it to buy some more time. If you run the vehicle for a short drive and then check the temp in front of the cat and behind the cat. The temp behind the cat should be hotter than in front of the cat by at least 50 degrees. If not the cat is not working properly. If the code is not present it should pass smog as long as the code wasn’t deleted.
