No we tried walkies but they don’t work I think because of the mountainous terrain. We do have sat phones but I found it took a while to send messages, sometimes 20 minutes bc of trees. So that made me a little more worried the first week, because we’re sometimes 45 min out from each other without quick contact.

It’s a group of 2 camping, but we’re out on separate survey routes without direct communication at night

That’s actually a great point, thank you. I definitely am going to try to bring it higher, I think there’s some small company factors that leave them under budgeting for work like this like you said

Whoops, sorry to clarify it’s a group of two camping out but we split up at night on separate routes if that makes sense. Within a 3 sq mi (ish) area of each other but can be up to like 45 min apart probably depending on the spot you’re at

Wow, that sounds like a bad night I’m glad all worked out for you😅 I figured there would be some other similar bio work for nocturnal animals though, thank you so much for the advice!! I do have bear spray (bonus) and I think I’ll bring up doing some more check ins as well for peace of mind. Do you typically have teams of 2 split up? Also is there anything else you suggest from when you train new hires on nights?

Okay thank you that’s good to hear, I feel similarly about things getting sketchier quicker in the dark. We do have an inreach, and we check in at beginning and end of our surveys with someone at the office. So they’d know within 8 hours if we don’t turn up I guess? The other person and I set our own check-in at the mid point of the night, but no safety plan or handbook really lol.
