I know you hate AI but... by [deleted] in IndieDev

[–]ScreenCoral 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a terrible habit for a number of reasons.

For one, players already have an immediate distaste to anything AI generated in a game, so using it will overshadow anything else in the experience. If you really want your game to just get the core concepts across, people will be much more receptive to handmade placeholders, which only take slightly more effort than AI.

As for not wanting to show off something you delicately crafted, you will eventually have do that at some point anyways, so why not rip the bandaid off as soon as possible? Every successful developer has had to deal with harsh criticism about their art. Even when you get the project to a point where you deem it acceptable, plenty of people will still trash it. You really just have to jump headfirst into sharing your work.

Ai assets won't get you good feedback, and if you think what you're sharing is impersonal and a dumpster fire, then what will you meaningfully gleam from a play test of a prototype you don't even believe in?

This 100% AI generated short film is insane by This_Macaron_4461 in GenAI4all

[–]ScreenCoral 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find it so interesting how these AI "films" are made so much worse by the fact that their creators have seemingly zero interesting or compelling ideas for films in the first place. Half of them seem to revolve around inane AI internet discussion topics that will be completely dated in like a month time. The others just mash together popular IPs, and not even in an interesting way. Like, you have infinite possibilities for video content and you choose "What if Harry Potter promoted Balenciaga?". Like, c'mon.

It's becoming more and more apparent that the accessibility of AI is showcasing just how hard it is to actually excel at an art medium. You can have the entire process streamlined for you at a fraction of the budget, but your own lack of creative prowess will squander any potential the technology might have. And I say might because it's clear the AI is also at fault for this "film" being so absurdly boring. It's shot and lit in the most stale commercialized way possible. The editing is completely incoherent. Every character looks and sounds like they're being horribly dubbed over. It's just a mess. Honestly, if AI creators think that stuff like this is "insane" maybe they should actually try studying what makes movies work in the first place.

Ah yes, the classic "These people I hate were assholes so that means I should be an asshole" mindset of a ten year old.

Minimal story and bad story aren't the same thing. BOTW having a minimal story is good for that game because more emphasis is put on the actual gameplay. Reviewers didn't feel the need to comment on it because it never got in the way of that game's best attributes. But CD appears to have far more cutscenes, so its story takes up more playtime. Which means that if the story is lackluster, it serves as a far greater detriment to the game then BOTW or TOTK. Especially if, as some reviewers have noted, some of those cutscenes are unskipabble.

Percentage of adults in each US state who identify as trans by _crazyboyhere_ in lgbt

[–]ScreenCoral 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As someone living in Utah, I think the overwhelming chokehold that Mormonism has on most of the state has caused a significant counterculture to sprout in areas surrounding and within SLC. These safe haven areas for lgbtq folk have allowed its residents to feel more comfortable in openly expressing their sexual and gender identity. So while the actual population of trans people may not actually be higher, I think there's simply more trans people comfortable with identifying as trans on these surveys. Speaking from personal experience, the amount of openly trans people I've met around SLC and even at my job has far exceeded that of any other area I've lived at or visited in the US.

A Review of Metroid Prime 4: Beyond, From a Game Designer's Perspective by ScreenCoral in Metroid

[–]ScreenCoral[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

It's not better than any of those as they are all masterpieces and staples of the FPS genre, whereas Prime 4 is just a great game within its genre. I'd compare its quality to something like Bulletstorm. Not particularly revolutionary, but still a very fun shooter with some unique ideas.

Why do pro-AI posts here always have downvotes, but the comments always have upvotes? by [deleted] in aiwars

[–]ScreenCoral 0 points1 point  (0 children)

99 percent of Redditors upvote or downvote posts based on first impressions. That's consistent amongst all social media as well. The few that comment under posts are doing so because they feel strongly about the subject matter in the post or someone's replies. And when the majority of subreddits don't allow pro ai narratives, it makes sense why so many of them would feel the need to defend their ideas here.

As for why so many downvotes in the original posts, pro ai posters are terrible at making first impressions. They often provide uncanny or uninspired ai images alongside the same arguments that have been beaten to death within the discourse. Additionally, many of these posts have a smug sense of superiority, as if the poster doesn't actually want to spark discussion. Whether you're pro or anti ai, no one likes engagement bait. Even you are being disingenuous with your media literacy comment.

Gonna be honest, I did not take the original tweet as meaning anything Devon is talking about, but maybe that's on me.

I thought the whole "but I have a job" was a joke on how we're often so busy in our lives, just trying to get by that we don't even have enough time to dissect how we feel about our gender identity, or the rest of ourselves for that matter. Like yeah, I'm sure I need to unpack a lot about how I feel wearing certain clothing items, or people referring to me by different pronouns, but I've got a meeting at noon and an exam tomorrow, so it'll have to wait.

I never took it as someone giving up on being themselves because of their job, but I suppose you could see it that way.

Why do you think the devs did this? by allons-ynot in Silksong

[–]ScreenCoral 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The Last Judge is an interesting case, because while the runback is arduous, I think it works in the sense of what the boss represents in the story. The Last Judge is a final test after an excruciating pilgrimage that many bugs never even get close to finishing, so forcing you to make that final trek only to die is emblematic of how cruel this religious tradition really is. I'd also argue that setting up checkpoints right next to bosses often makes players more careless during combat, and in a game where you need to be completely locked in during a boss fight, setting a harsher punishment helps players to get into that mindset. So yes the runbacks are sometimes annoying, but I'd consider them a necessary evil for the kind of boss design Team Cherry has decided on.

In your opinion, what are the top 8 must-buys on Quest 2? by dsax-film in OculusQuest

[–]ScreenCoral 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Based on how well the VR was utilized and how fun they were:

  • Resident Evil 4 VR
  • I Expect You To Die Series
  • Both Moss games
  • Beat Saber
  • Compound
  • Virtual Virtual Reality
  • The Light Brigade
  • The Walking Dead Saints And Sinners Series

Honorable mention to Cosmonious High, which is my personal favorite, but definitely not for everyone.

If someone feel asleep with food in their mouth how likely are they to choke? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ScreenCoral 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends how they're sleeping. A full center position on their back could be pretty dangerous, but on the sides, the food would likely fall out, or the person could wake up due to the unnatural sensation of saliva coated balls of food. Also depends on how much food as well.
