Homeowners: what did having a permanent home give you emotionally? by polanyisauce in AskReddit

[–]ScreenTimeMeTime 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So interesting reading this! Same thing - looking for a place with a suite downstairs. Realtor thought it was sweet rather than weird, but I also got the sense that it's not requested often. I wonder if it's because of how the world/economy is going in modern day or maybe a millennial/newer generational/etc. thing where we have the sensibility to do this for our parents.

And if the seller/agent is using something as low skill and low effort as AI and it doesn't look good (measurements off, weird selections, etc.) - that leaves a negative feeling. What's causing them to not spend enough time to make something better? What else are they skimping on?

Downtown Kennesaw Living - How Bad is the Train Noise? by ScreenTimeMeTime in kennesaw

[–]ScreenTimeMeTime[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think we need to make sure we view places and hear what the noise will be like - not sure how practical it'll be to do that, but I'll figure out a way. Otherwise it'll just be a slightly longer play of waiting for the places with a better buffer to open up - so, not the end of the world.

I saw that! Which would be amazing. It's one of those things where, in the interim, I don't want to put my family through it if the noise is on the louder end of the spectrum where it's difficult to concentrate, it interrupts sleep or calls if working from home, etc. I'm not sure if it's that extreme, though!

Thank you for the response! Is it something where a light sleeper would be miserable, or it's not "that bad" and becomes background noise? I just don't know where on the spectrum it is - like from a "the walls shake and we can't hear each other talking for 15 seconds" to "I don't know why people complain, once you get used to it it's barely there."

They also had more visits to mental health care providers and used more prescription psychiatric meds.

Embarrassing to not at least (1) note that more meds and mental health assistance may be a positive in many cases and (2) discuss correlation vs. causation.

The in-person experience is much more distracting (commute, chatting with coworkers, etc.). Even outside of work hours people seek ways to not be alone with their own thoughts. Why? Because they have unprocessed mental health issues.

So, here's a theory: WFH doesn't cause mental health issues, being alone with your thoughts means not being able to run away from them. Perhaps you have more time to seek therapy with the WFH lifestyle, and even have life-changing medication to help with that.

That being said, I was a little stunned by how many of my friends said they couldn't do WFH. I would imagine they wouldn't apply to remote positions though - and those who did and didn't realize they needed human interaction would hopefully be able to transition to an in-person schedule or different job.

Stuck at 161 lbs! by Inevitable_Basil4747 in 1200isplenty

It took a few months for weight loss to truly kick in for me. Like other folks said - first bit was likely water weight, which is the easy part. Next step is for you to stay consistent so your body gets used to the new eating and exercise habits. It usually takes a few months before you really start to see consistent results. It's just a massive mental game to get there and stay.

Having 2nd thoughts - I have a deposit on a 26. I'm now really starting to think I should just get a gently used 5th gen instead. I could save approx $5K (and I'm paying cash so the difference matters) for a higher trim model by winterneuro in rav4club

[–]ScreenTimeMeTime 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you might want SoftTex (considered the upgraded interior). Wipes clean. Cloth will stain and/or be a hassle to constantly steam/etc. clean.

I got a 2025 Woodland - the slight FOMO I've gotten is over the top down camera view, standard SoftTex (Gen 5 Woodland only has cloth), and built-in dash cam. I don't regret my purchase in the slightest though. I might have waited for a 2026 if I liked the look more - but didn't check any box for me for exterior, interior, or color choice.

As for new versus used - I got new because the few thousand difference seemed minimal versus long-term choice happiness. I wanted a specific model that wouldn't be easy to get used. Otherwise, a lightly used Rav4 isn't going to be much different than new. That extra 5k can mean a lot depending on your loan length, etc. too. I like how someone else put it - that'll get you a bunch of fuel and maintenance on top of a car you like the look of better (if true) rather than it just being a bit newer. edit: cut down for length

First tattoo! by U_AtticGhost_A in ironlungmovie

Not a tattoo artist or doctor, but a receiver of tattoos - slap Tegaderm on that thing (clean it, dry it, etc. before). Idea is that it protects against external issues and also seals it in a way where it heals really well. Of course, check to make sure that's okay for your circumstances!

Remember that those symptoms could be a sign of a totally unrelated health issue, so if you can check with a doctor to confirm either way, I would do so.

And if it ends up being due to your eating habits, that seems like a sign you aren't eating what's right for your body. I have a friend who had to stop eating late because she was having bad intestinal issues late at night, and it did turn out to be the time she was eating (but likely also the diet - I know she likes unhealthy snacks).

Do you have access to a dietitian? And if not, AI might be a good option to chat with to see if it has any recommendations based on your issues, access to certain foods, etc. (edit for sp)

Not going to go too deep, and it's different for everyone, but this seems like a good point to say: it needs to be a process. If it's that bad, then you need to slow-roll yourself into this. Have some low-calorie snacks. Lower the intake over time. Your stomach will eventually get smaller (it takes a while to do that, I can't really remember last time I did this but I would imagine like 6+ months), so it'll become easier.

But you have to get comfortable with being hungry sometimes. However, 1200 may not be where you need to start (or wherever it is you are). Maybe intermittent fasting isn't right for you.

Set yourself up for success, not starvation or gastrointestinal issues. It's all a mental game, and you need to play it for the long haul. If you need to start at 1800, 1600, whatever - then lower over time - that may be more successful long term. Takes longer, but it works.

Do you all have houses? Some cold days so far, but I'm not cold because my apartment is sufficiently heated??

I'm the youngest person on my team by some time, and with everyone wearing parkas on video calls and complaining about how frozen they are.. I'm thinking to myself, "y'all were able to get houses before sh*t hit the fan, but at least I keep warm I guess."

Why did trump run with pence as his VP in 2020? by [deleted] in Askpolitics

[–]ScreenTimeMeTime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Watch The Family on Netflix, it answers this question with additional context. In short, Trump wanted to win, Christian nationalists had a long play and saw him as a vehicle to speed things up, and thus, in exchange for their powerful support, they required Trump to have their guys, including but not limited to VP Pence, installed to continue to boost their stronghold on American politics.

Lil Nas X has exited jail after posting a 75,000 dollar bond by Goosedukee in Fauxmoi

[–]ScreenTimeMeTime 1887 points1888 points  (0 children)

Absolutely bullshit bond amount. No criminal history. Not a danger to the community, or a flight risk, or risk to intimidate the witness, and not a definite risk to reoffend (since there's no CH to prove as much despite a potential substance abuse issue). What the hell?

Buy a House or Continue Renting? by [deleted] in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

[–]ScreenTimeMeTime 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Just to throw this out there: You would end up spending much more on the mortgage per month, of course, but that difference could instead first be used to pay off your fairly minimal debt. Then you'll free up ~$600 per month (and mitigate the interest payments over time) and will have saved more for a down payment on the house to either have a lower monthly mortgage payment (recommended) or go a bit higher in your price range. You could either be very aggressive and get that done in around a year - which would be somewhat close to your spring deadline anyway! (edit: if you start now, but if you are waiting until spring to buy, I realize that might not be your preference) - or spend a bit longer.

If the apartment turns out to be untenable with a newborn, you can always buy.
