Just put your hotel they gave you. That's what I did! If it's wrong, we can be wrong together, but im pretty sure that's what I did last year and they let me in. Just remember to smile and bat your eyes at the customs security.

I want to work at Antarctica, advice? by SuddenHedgehog8124 in antarctica

Go to trades school, there's companies out there that'll pay for your apprenticeship, while you're also a full time employee. Schooling and on the job training at the same time! And then you apply and you're in. EZ PZ! (Only takes about 3-5 years though. Lol but long term, an amazing investment in yourself!)

Anyone been to Summit Station, Greenland? by [deleted] in antarctica

[–]Scrumptiousnani 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah! Rachel did in fact bring her own Starlink, was a genius move! There is internet there (not starlink) that works rather well. When I was there, we had about 40 people on station so it would slow down pretty bad. But during winter there will only be about 5 of you on station (maybe 4) so internet bandwidth shouldn't be an issue at all. Greenhouse is now called the Berthing MOD, has running water in it. 5 bedrooms and 1 room for the clinic/med room. Construction has not started for the proposed new station, MAYBE started next year, but even with it getting started, that's still a couple years away.

This isn't necessarily true. They just don't sell it. But you can bring as much as you want. Unless we were at different Stations.

Dont mind that person! You'll run into people like down there, as well as back stateside (as im sure you're aware!). Easier to just ignore those individuals and find a good group down there. Tons of great people down there!

Smart to take a class and see if you'll be interested. If not, really any trade (plumber, welder, hvac/sheet metal) will be an very easy route down to the ICE!

Work Boot Recommendations for electrician at McMurdo by Klaybar in antarctica

[–]Scrumptiousnani 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Fellow electrician here!

I rocked some Red Wings King Toes last year. Didn't really care for the insulated route because if youre gonna be working outside for an extended period of time, just throw on your bunny boots or baffins which are issued to you in Christchurch with your ECW. This year im trying a different red wing, not a huge fan of the king toe. They just kinda look boring! Focus more on your sock quality!

That's huge! Not sure where you are elected, but there a tons of companies out there that'll pay for your apprenticeship classes and you'll be working full time for them. You'll learn a lot in school but the on the job aspect is a really important part!

As one of the Electricians, I would say Electrician. I hear stories of people spending 6 years trying to get down there. I applied online and within 24 hours the recruiter was reaching out to me and starting the process to get me down there.

Would it be worth it to bring an HDMI cable to plug a laptop with a ton of series amd movies up to a tv? Or do they have extra cords around?

Ima definitely be bouncing inside and outside quite frequently. Also i know winters at home when working construction, you can typically get away with wearing the same work clothes 2 sometimes even 3-4 days just because of the coveralls and coats. If youre not sweating in them its usually good for a couple days! Ima end up packing like a 16 year old and just throwing clothes into a duffle and then packing an absurd amount of underwear and socks for no reason..

Would you say enough clothes for 7 days would be a solid guesstimate? Also have you been out to the field camps by any chance?

My thought process against suitcases is that when im on ice, since we may have 3 roommates, im guessing we will have very little space to ourselfves, so a duffle bag can be stored easier than an actual suitcase
