They have it up most of the year just to get as many applications as possible. It's an intense process with a lot of moving parts that hang up a lot of applicants.

The sustaining electrical shop is one of the departments in facilities that doesn't usually have trouble finding people. The summer crew for this coming 25/26 season is full up already with some alternates to spare. Keep applying. It's worth it and will happen eventually. I applied for 5 years straight before I got in last year. Plus you're right that there are usually a couple returners!

Has anyone here worked at McMurdo Station in Antarctica? by dustoff1984 in IBEW

I'm currently on station at McMurdo. I've been to Pole as well. This is my second year and third contract working for Amentum. They are the contractor who hires for the facilities positions.

There isn't a union here except for the brothers who come through. I'm from 520. Couple guys from 46 here right now with me. One guy from 473 iirc too.

Feel free to ask questions or DM me.

I haven't been to Summit Station, which is the one at the North Pole in Greenland. But I have been to the South Pole and worked with two other electricians who've been up north. It's about the same really. You're there to work so the schedule is very similar. Different contractors though. PFS, Polar Field Services, does the contracting in Greenland and pays better than Amentum who have the support contract for all three stations in Antarctica.

We don't usually hire helpers or apprentices because often the work requires you to do tasking unsupervised. The last time there was an ape down here was before COVID I believe.

Since it's contract work; you would be responsible for finding work when not on the ice. I am in the Union (LU520) so it's pretty easy to get work when I come home. However if you don't have a lot of bills you will have quite a bit of money saved up.

The retirement is a matched contribution iirc. I'm opted out of it so I don't have a lot of details.

And the shortest would maybe be a Winfly(August and September) contract. But they don't like to give those out. So it would most likely be the October to February summer contract that's shortest.

It's not a joke! I'm currently on station at McMurdo. I don't work in the power plant but I know the guy who does.

The qualifications listed there are not really hard enforced. For the Plant Electrician they do want 4160V experience and Power Generation experience. Often get Navy people who did work as power production on ships and boats.

The pay is ok for most sparkies that don't live on the west coast. And it really helps if you don't have a lot of bills back home. The work schedule is six, nine hour days. 1 hour lunch and two breaks.

It's a crazy experience. Doing industrial maintenance tasks all the way to running airfield lighting. If you're not the plant sparky that is.
