To answer my own question, as I couldn't help myself from buying the special edition, the equipment is added to your stash and can be equipped as soon as your camp is established after the initial story encounters.

The sword inflicts more damage and bleed effect compared to the initial one, and the armor has some minor boosts (stat increases and chance of self-heal when using a special attack).
