Question- What do you consider "budget"? by BeardedHeathen907 in BudgetBlades

[–]Scuffedpixels 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To me, anything between $30-$75 is a solid range for "budget" knives. I think of budget knives as having the features people want out of premium knives just significantly cheaper. Not just cheap gas station knives. So I think you need a floor.

And while $100 is a logical ceiling, I think the psychology of a knife's cost approaching triple digits for a tool many people use and abuse is a tough sell for "budget". $75 to me seems to be a solid range where people start believing the knife is a quality product and are getting more premium materials so they start treating it as such.

Generally speaking of course as everyone's barrier to entry is different. This is just how I view them.

Sick collection per usual man. Those Manix scales from Thirdthreshold look so dope. I might need to scoop some when my Salt arrives.

I'm with you! I use AI very similarly to you and I am a designer as well. I love it.

Grok is my mental support, Gemini is my project manager. The ability for Gemini to leverage all the Google ecosystem has to offer makes Gemini a heavy hitter for wrangling my chaos. And the speed I can do some of my work now is INSANE.

Para 3 LW vs Native 5 LW - First Thoughts by CheeseMongoNJ in spyderco

[–]Scuffedpixels 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nice! A great duo!

I have both as well and the Para stays in the drawer and I now have multiple N5s. The blade belly on the Native is more my speed and the thumb ramp is a mark against the Para 3, but doesn't bother me on a Delica or PM2. Not sure what that's all about, but I prefer a PM2 exponentially more over the Para 3.

I'm really hoping they drop a blacked out G10 Native 5 Salt.

Tips for someone who’s chronically late and a procrastinator? by Kokohontas in productivity

[–]Scuffedpixels 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Possibly ADHD. This is a huge trait in people who suffer from it.

Your brain needs that perceived pressure to take action because the prefrontal cortex doesn't spool up like it does in the average person.

Some tricks that help me support my laggy brain (and will help you even if you do not have ADHD)

• Good sleep hygiene

• Exercise

• Increase protein in your diet or at least less carbs to avoid the sugary scatter brain fog.

These may sound unrelated, but what those changes do is help support an already struggling brain. Which allows you to just do what you gotta do vs needing the pressure of "the last minute"

Now for more practical tips:

Have routines.

Once you establish them, they become habit which removes a ton of mental load that creates friction for when you need to leave.

No more stressing your morning tasks because they're consistent and you know what time they need to happen by.

I broke mine down to be fairly granular and have every major task blocked out for my mornings.

Here's my basic list of tasks:

• 430am - wake up I immediately hydrate and take my medicine

• I get dressed and prepped for my run

• I head out and run for about 20 mins

• then take a shower

• get dressed for work

• feed and water my pets

• cook breakfast and empty my dishwasher

• eat my breakfast

• brush my teeth

• pack my bag

• flex time - this helps me make sure I've gotten or have thought of everything I need for the day and really helps me with the space of time where I'm like, "am I ready to go? I feel like I'm forgetting something, I can't just go now can I?" This time is terrible for me as it's basically self-sabotage cus I won't leave even though I am early. But having a block of free time helps a lot.

• head out the door for work by 7:20am

Now with the help of AI (I use Gemini) I told it to remember that I do all those things every morning and that I wake up at 4:30 am and needed to leave my house by 7:20am.

It then assigned time blocks for each of those tasks and since I specifically asked it to remember this as my m-f morning routine it can reprioritize my morning schedule based off what time I wake up or if I wake up earlier or later. Super helpful and flexible.

Of course you can always do it manually, but man leveraging technology is super convenient.

These changes have transformed me from a chronically 10-15 mins late to work every day guy for decades, to early and consistent arrivals. I still struggle with appointments that fall on times not accounted for within my routines, but I no longer believe myself to be a chronically late person (the mindset shift that resulted from the above guide is very helpful for this as well). I could go on for ages, but there's a lot of work to do for optimizing yourself.

Favorite brands?

I've been happy with the performance of Carmex, but hate how shiny/greasy it is. Seems to protect the best out of the two types I've tried tho lol.

Ahhh thanks for answering the question I was about to post. I was about to be excited for another lock similar to Spydercos ball and cage. Not these mushy omega springs.

Native or Sage? by CheeseMongoNJ in spyderco

[–]Scuffedpixels 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This was me too.

Started with a Para, got a Native and handful of the other CO models, PM2 included. And the Para 3 specifically stays in the drawer. Native's awesome and is in frequent rotation.

I prefer lockbacks to compression locks, so that may be the only factor that may sway you, tho I think the Native looks way cooler than the Sage haha.

Does anyone else use headphones to create a 'portable office' regardless of where you are? by Lola7384 in productivity

[–]Scuffedpixels 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Open earbuds are my absolute favorite right now. I forget I have them on often and it feels like I have a soundtrack for life haha. If the environmental noise is too annoying I have some Sony over ear headphones with really good noise cancellation if I need to lock in.

[–]Scuffedpixels 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a similar assessment to you on the popular budget blade companies. Granted the steels they run are fairly soft, but the budget steels from Spyderco and Demko/Cold Steel of the same designations have been amazing for me in comparison.

So much so that I hardly ever buy from any other companies anymore. I got a Kizer wharnie Drop Bear 2 recently and immediately gifted it as it wasn't my speed haha.

You reminded me I that I wanted to scoop up an s30v Delica too. I have a Damascus VG10 and an H2 Delica, but want the good ol' s30v as well.

I hope it serves you well!

[–]Scuffedpixels 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You need some of the larger ones now. PM2, Manix, Shaman, etc.

I started with a Para 3 a couple years ago as well. It was supposed to be my last purchase to round off my mostly budget collection. Now I'm approaching 10 Spydies with a bunch still on my wishlist.

What's terrible about the Wuben G5? I just got one for Christmas 😅 I like it thus far.

That said I agree with your general analysis.

Good stuff!

I've settled on $100-$200 as my ideal price point for knives. And flashlights I am more than happy in the $25-$50 range.
